The National Association of Counties voted Saturday to urge federal authorities to focus more federal flood control funding on low-income communities.
Nearly 3,000 fourth-grade students from around Santa Cruz County came to Cabrillo College’s Aptos campus Friday to get their first taste of college life and, organizers hope, show them that post-secondary education is within their reach.
The annual Hanamatsuri at the Watsonville Buddhist Temple included a raffle, food sales, vendors of various goods, a bonsai tree display, live music and other events in hopes of bringing the community up to speed with Japanese culture.
Watsonville was visited by a helicopter Wednesday as it deposited mosquito control granules to 40 acres of local marshes. The project, started at 8 a.m. and included portions of Watsonville Slough, Pinto Lake County Park, Sunset State Beach pond and Atkinson pond, said Paul Binding, manager of Santa Cruz County Mosquito Abatement/Vector Control.
