Watsonville artists to showcase work at ‘Cultivando Cultura’

This Friday, celebrate Watsonville’s arts and culture scene with live music, artisan vendors, Baile Folklorico and more.

Arte del Corazón, a nonprofit that supports underrepresented artists, and the Santa Cruz Arts Council joined together to create the first annual ‘Cultivando Cultura.’ The festival will feature art by local, Watsonville-based artists.

Arte del Corazón Executive Director Monica Galvan, an artist herself with a bachelor’s in art from UC Berkeley, hopes that the events put on by the organization create space for more Latinx artists to showcase their work.

Cultivando Cultura will take place Friday at Romo Park, 335 Main St., from 2-7:30pm.

Watsonville High graduate has chance at national ag title

Pamela Donoso, a recent Watsonville High School graduate, is a finalist in a national agriculture contest, and will have a chance to win a scholarship and national title.

Donoso has been working on a project researching fruit production, focusing on picking in local strawberry fields in Watsonville. She has already won a state title in Fruit Production, alongside Watsonville student David Estrada, who won in the Nursery Operations Category. After winning her California title, she competed for a spot as a National Proficiency Finalist, which chooses only four students from across the country.

Donoso is the first student in Watsonville history to be chosen as a finalist in the national contest. In the coming weeks, she will represent Watsonville and California and will take the stage on Oct. 29 to see if her project will win her a national title and scholarship.
