WATSONVILLE — A man was arrested Feb. 1 after surveillance footage caught him using a torch lighter to damage a city elevator.

According to Watsonville Police, the suspect was inside an elevator at the parking garage on West Beach Street in mid-January when he pulled out a torch lighter and burned a camera. He also reportedly ripped out the wires of an electrical box, causing the elevator to malfunction.

After reviewing the surveillance footage, officers identified the suspect as 39-year-old James Thunder, and days later, they found him riding a bike on Rodriguez Street and arrested him, police said. Officers also recovered the torch lighter and a glass pipe.

Thunder was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on Feb. 1 on several charges, including attempted arson.
