Aptos junior Brynn Mitchell and senior Caroline Miller were recently honored by the coaches of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League. Mitchell was named the league’s Midfielder of the Year, and Miller earned the Goalie of the Year.

Those two players — both of which were in their third season as varsity starters — helped the Mariners finish second in the SCCAL behind champion Soquel, which produced the league’s M.V.P. in sophomore forward Sarah Canavan.

Mitchell finished tied for second on the team in goals (10) and also dished a team-high eight assists, while Miller posted 10 shutouts in goal for Aptos, which finished with a 13-1-6 overall record and fell in the semifinals of the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs to Christopher in penalty kicks.

Soquel also had senior Mackenzie Rastatter named the league’s Defender of the Year, and Knights’ coach Jon Baron was selected as the Coach of the Year.

Mariners’ sophomore defender Chantal Aguirre, senior midfielder Olivia Meier and sophomore forward Gisselle Vasquez all made the All-SCCAL First Team.

Aguirre — a second-year varsity starter — was a stellar defender on the wing while Meier (9 goals, 8 assists), who will play NCAA Division I soccer at Binghamton next year, and Vasquez (10 goals, 5 assists) combined for 19 goals and 13 assists.

Three Mariners made the All-SCCAL Second Team: Bella McDaniel (Sr.), Jazmin Castaneda (Fr.) and Aubree Westjohn (Jr.).
