WATSONVILLE — The Watsonville Police Department has launched a program to help them connect with a population of people who are often reluctant to call them for help.
On May 8, 11 and 12, Watsonville Police officers and the Youth Violence Prevention Task Force held “Agua Con La Chota,” or “Water with the Cops,” aimed at encouraging agricultural fieldworkers to speak about topics that mattered to them.
The program was created at the suggestion of the Youth Violence Prevention Task Force, whose members said that bolstering community relations could help WPD create safe and vibrant neighborhoods.
Workers at the first meetings discussed immigration issues and the procedures to follow when calling the police.
“The conversations were insightful to all who participated and helped humanize our police officers,” Watsonville Police Capt. Jorge Zamora said. “It also built trust with members of the Watsonville community who traditionally experience anxiety when interacting with the police.”
The workers got a WPD water bottle to help them stay hydrated while working, and some will also go on “ride-alongs” with officers.
