APTOS — Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies investigated a potential threat to Aptos High by a student Sunday, and determined the threat via social media was meant as a joke.
The student, who was not named, is not facing any charges, Sheriff’s Sgt. Dee Baldwin said.
“After an in-depth interview, it was determined that the threat was meant as a joke with no intention to carry out any harmful acts,” he stated in a press release.
According to Baldwin, the message essentially said ‘don’t come to school.’ It made no mention of weapons or specific violence that would occur.
Baldwin said investigators took several steps to determine there was no danger.
“We have worked diligently with the school and made sure that they were kept abreast of the information as the investigation developed,” Baldwin stated. “We take these types of cases very seriously and dedicated many resources to conduct a thorough investigation.”
The Sheriff’s office assigned numerous deputies to the school on Monday as a precautionary measure, Baldwin said.
