The Watsonville High girls’ volleyball team continued its mission for a league title by handling business on the road against Trinity Christian.

The Wildcatz swept the Warriors on Tuesday in three sets, 25-8, 25-15, 25-23, in Pacific Coast Athletic League Santa Lucia division action.

Watsonville improved to 10-1 in league play and holds a two-game lead in the league standings over Trinity, which dropped to 8-3 after the loss.

“Tonight, we won the first set easily as well as the second set but then we decided to go down 1-8 (in the third) again,” said Watsonville coach Tina Pendleton in a text message.

Freshman Nora Cole helped the Wildcatz battle back in the third set to take a 9-8 lead and they didn’t look back after.

Watsonville is currently on an eight-game winning-streak in PCAL-Santa Lucia play, including last week’s victories against North Monterey County and Stevenson.

The Wildcatz were also coming off an impressive performance in the Alvarez High Varsity Tournament on Saturday.

“It was amazing,” Pendleton said. “I think what helped us is that we played in the Alvarez tournament this last weekend and played teams in the Pacific Coast Athletic League divisions that were ranked well above us.”

One of those teams was Mount Madonna of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League. The Wildcatz took the Hawks to three sets in the loss.

Watsonville rebounded to win the silver division by beating King City, Seaside and North Salinas. Mt. Madonna won the gold division.
