WATSONVILLE—Dozens of families lined up at Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes Friday afternoon, waiting for a parcel of food aimed at getting them through the Thanksgiving holiday.

This included a chicken or turkey, produce, bread and oil, among other things.

The organization’s executive director Joann Godoy said that 661 households were set to get food over the three-day distribution. That adds up to 2,382 people, and a whopping 21 million calories, for those who count such things.

These distributions are nothing new at Loaves and Fishes, which celebrated its 30th birthday this year. The organization provides food and produce – in addition to prepared lunches – throughout the year, Godoy said.

“People need to have food, and people want good, healthy food to feed their family at Thanksgiving,” she said.

Friday’s distribution was staffed by a team of volunteers, many of which were students from Ceiba College Preparatory Academy.

“We’re here to help the community, and help the homeless,” said Sophia Rodriguez, 17. “I’m happy I can help the people from the community.”

Ron Sandidge of the Freedom Rotary Club said he has been helping at the Thanksgiving distribution for the past eight years.

“This is really a neat thing,” he said. “Just seeing the homeless issue, hunger every day on the streets by living in this community—people in need—you have to do something. I hope this work sends some people home happy, hopeful and thankful, and above all, not hungry.”
