Tarmo Hannula: When my friend Noel, a family attorney, dropped me off in downtown Watsonville early Wednesday I walked into the Second Street Café for a coffee. For years I’ve carried my own reusable thermos to save on throw-away cups. In line I got to talking to a woman named Kate who works with Doug Keegan at the Immigration Project in Watsonville. Next, I walked over to the Post Office to drop off a letter. The cold morning air, being brushed with an occasional light rain, was refreshing and made the coffee taste even better. I walked into Jack’s Cigar and spoke with Zarko, the owner for a bit. He always seems to have his finger on the pulse for the downtown scene.

I passed by the construction job of the Laundry Day Laundromat in the former Union Bank on East Lake and Brennan. The owner tells me he’s aiming for a mid-February soft opening.

A man has been arrested in a case regarding numerous vehicles being stuck by flying projectiles over the past 11 months in Prunedale, the California Highway Patrol said.

The CHP confirmed that 53-year-old Charles Lafferty was arrested Wednesday by the CHP. He is being charged with possession of a silencer, throwing substance at a vehicle with the intention of causing great bodily injury, and assault with a deadly weapon that was not a firearm. There were 69 recorded cases.

Watsonville Police Dept. held a party today for retiring Master Officer Angel Calderon. He’s been at it for 24 years. In the numerous times I’ve worked with him in the field while on my job, he was always friendly, helpful and soft-spoken. I’ve never seen him get alarmed, even in some very trying situations. A lot of experience is walking out the door with him, and everyone at the Pajaronian wishes him the best.
