Scholarship opportunities for Cabrillo students in healthcare field

The Pajaro Valley Community Health Trust Board of Directors recently announced it has been named administrator of the Dr. Ehler H. Eiskamp Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will provide $50,000 in local healthcare scholarships.

A Stanford graduate and the Monterey Bay area’s first professionally trained surgeon, Dr. Eiskamp practiced medicine in Watsonville for nearly 60 years before retiring in his ‘80s to tend his ranch. Before his death in 2000, Dr. Eiskamp created a Trust to support charitable and educational efforts locally. The Trust’s assets have grown to more than $1 million under the stewardship of his son John G. Eiskamp.

Working with the Cabrillo College Foundation, funds generated from this Endowment, approximately $50,000 annually, will be distributed as scholarships to Cabrillo students pursuing healthcare professions, with the first application process anticipated to open in March 2020.

For information about how to apply for the scholarship visit pvhealthtrust.org or call Health Trust at 761-5639.

Mobile home outreach event comes to Aptos

Twin Lakes Church in Aptos is hosting a mobile home owner outreach event from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 21.

Everyone’s mobile home owner needs to make sure their name is on the Housing and Community Development title to their mobile home.

If the title is wrong, the owner can’t get permits to modify their home or do some repairs; selling or refinancing the home will be difficult and the State may think the owner owes them thousands of dollars in unpaid fees.

Checking one’s home title is free and has no downside.

Mobile home owners can go to the State’s website, https://registeryourmobilehomeca.org, or call 1-800-952-8356 for the Register your Mobile Home Program. Or come to the Mobile Office at Twin Lakes Church, 2701 Cabrillo College Drive, Aptos, on Feb. 21.

Call for an appointment or to get more information. This free program ends this year.

New hotel providing complimentary rooms to cancer patients through ACS

The American Cancer Society can help patients who are receiving treatment away from home. The ACS is working with hotels through its Hotel Partners Program to provide complimentary rooms to cancer patients who need to travel out of town to receive lifesaving treatment.

ACS recently announced Hampton Inn & Suites Salinas joined the Hotel Partners Program in Monterey County.

“The Hotel Partners Program provides a unique opportunity for area hotels to help people battling cancer receive lifesaving treatment,” said Donna Gavello, program manager. “Hotels that partner with the American Cancer Society show a commitment to their communities and to patients struggling with cancer. They can be proud that their hotels are taking an active role in the fight against cancer.”

In 2018, the American Cancer Society provided more than 10,600 complimentary nights of free lodging to cancer patients and their caregivers in California alone, saving the recipients an estimated $1.6 million in hotel costs.

For information about American Cancer Society free programs and services, including lodging, please visit cancer.org or call 1-800-227-2345.
