UC Santa Cruz cancelled in-person classes as of today because of coronavirus fears. Classes are now being offered through alternative methods at UCSC, as well as San Jose State and Gavilan College in Gilroy. Thus far coronavirus has sickened more than 125,200 people, according to official counts. By Wednesday evening officials said that at least 4,598 people have died. So far, the disease has been found in 108 countries.
There are varying reports that as many as two dozen people from the Grand Princess cruise ship, now docked in Oakland, were taken to Asilomar in Pacific Grove. Various news agencies reported that the group of people came in contact with others with coronavirus and were taken to a facility designed to deal with quarantines at Asilomar. The group was among thousands aboard the Grand Princess that ended up marooned in the waters outside of San Francisco last week once it was learned that some people aboard the Grand Princess tested positive for coronavirus.
In Washington President Trump said coronavirus “will go away,” and to stay calm. He said he is talking with Congress about paid sick leave for those choosing to stay home upon falling ill, but without providing details. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, said the days of minimizing the threat were over, The New York Times reported. “As a nation, we can’t be doing the kinds of things we were doing a few months ago.” Of the communities not yet affected, he said they “have to start taking seriously what you can do now,” to prepare for the day “when the infections will come — sorry to say, sad to say — they will,” the NYT wrote.
Some restaurants are now taking body temperatures at the door, as a form of testing for coronavirus.
