WATSONVILLE—A man was arrested after reportedly running from Watsonville police following a car stop Monday afternoon in downtown Watsonville.

Master Officer Charles Bailey said he tried to stop the car around 12:30pm when the driver suddenly shot down East Lake Avenue and nearly crashed. After abandoning the car and letting it roll to a stop, the male driver ran while his female passenger remained at the scene, Bailey said.

About 20 minutes later a witness aided police in locating the man, who raced into the Lettunich Building on the corner of Main and East Beach streets. Police found him hiding in a garbage can on the third floor where he was detained.

Both are facing illegal drug charges. The incident remains under investigation.
