Watsonville High seniors Adan Rivas and Louie Brambila will see once and for all who the fastest runner is within the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s Mission Division.

The Wildcatz duo will compete in the division finals at Christopher High on Friday at 4pm.

Rivas had the second best qualifying time in 11.56 seconds and finished slightly ahead of Brambila (11.86) at Tuesday’s division trials at Watsonville High.  

They finished behind Stevenson senior Evan Johnson (10.79), who already has the Central Coast Section’s season-best mark of 10.67 he set April 14. 

Johnson (22.20), who is committed to play football at BYU, along with Rivas (23.43) and MVC senior Nathan Hanson (24.12) also qualified for the 200.

Watsonville sophomore Ruben Mora (54.44) and Ceiba Collegiate Prep senior Noe Torres (54.59) qualified for the 400 finals.

Monte Vista Christian junior James Ponzio had the second fastest qualifying time in the 1,600 in 4:38.55 behind Marina senior Steven Aspeitia (4:32.67). 

North Monterey County juniors Gael Godinez (4:39.33), Irineo Navarro (4:44.03) and Miguel Alvarado (4:45.46) also qualified in the 1,600.

Godinez (2:06.32) had the second fastest time in the 800, followed by Ponzio (2:08.42) and Alvarado (2:06.85).

Other qualifiers in the 800 include NMC freshman Kenji Mellin Ramirez (2:10.53) and Torres (2:10.88). 

MVC senior Aiden Keegan (16.77) had the fastest qualifying time in the 110 hurdles. Other qualifiers include Watsonville senior Jung Soo Kim-Ebio (18.99), MVC senior Connor Lopes (19.13) and NMC junior Angel Martinez (21.00).

Keegan also had the fastest qualifying time in the 300 hurdles in 43.85, followed by Mora (44.17), MVC junior Ethan Amado (47.11), Kim-Ebio (47.05) and NMC junior Bruce Gabudao (47.48). 

Amado also qualified for the long jump (18-09) and triple jump (33-11) finals.

Other qualifiers in the long jump include NMC junior Aidan Ibarra, Watsonville freshman Nathaniel Aceves-Aguilar (34-07.50) and NMC senior Agustin Crotez (33-11).

Watsonville senior Sebastian Abonce (5-02), and MVC seniors Koen Vandenberg (05-02) and Michael Martin (5-00) all qualified for the high jump final.

MVC senior Clayton King had the best mark in the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 09.50 inches and in the discus (126-08).

Last week, he won the discus with a personal-best throw of 150 feet at the Central Coast Section Top 8 Meet at Los Gatos on April 23. 

It’s the second longest throw in the CCS this season behind Silver Creek sophomore Kyler Headley at 150-01.

Other qualifiers in the discus include Watsonville sophomore David Rocha-Vargas (117-11), MVC senior Andrew Hendrickson (101-04) and NMC senior Jose Pastrana (92-07).

Hendrickson (37-10), Pastrana (35-08), Rocha-Vargas (34-04) and NMC senior Angel Caballero Velasquez (34-03) all qualified for the shot put.

NMC sophomore Jonathan King, Ceiba senior Giovanny Melgoza, Pajaro Valley senior Juan Macias all qualified in the pole vault finals with jumps of 08-06.

NMC seniors James King and Kim-Ebio also qualified with jumps of 08-00.

Cypress Division

St. Francis junior Christian Magana and senior Garrett Lee qualified for both the 100 and 200 finals at the PCAL Cypress Division finals set for Friday at Gilroy High at 4pm. 

Magana had the fastest time in the 200 in 23.80 seconds and second fastest time in the 100 in 11.65, while Lee finished the 100 in 12.09 and 200 in 24.41.

Magana (19.06.50) and Lee (18-09.50) also qualified for the long jump final.

Senior distance runner Julian Vargas reset the school record in the 800 in 2:06.09 and set a personal-best in the 1,600 in 4:27.40 en route to a spot into the finals.
