WATSONVILLE—Three candidates have qualified to fill the vacant Area 5 seat on the Cabrillo College Board of Trustees, which covers Watsonville.
The candidates will be interviewed during a public meeting on Feb. 27 at 6pm at Cabrillo’s Watsonville Center, Room C107.
The three candidates are:
• Manuel Bersamin, former mayor and Watsonville City Council member and current director of TRIO Student Support Programs at Hartnell College
• Rebecca Garcia, former mayor and Watsonville City Council member, who ended a 20-year tenure as a Cabrillo Trustee in 2012
• Martha Victoria Vega, a teacher in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District and current member of the Watsonville Planning Commission
“We are holding this in-person meeting of our Governing Board at our Watsonville Center knowing how valuable it is to include the local community as we interview candidates and vote to appoint a new Area 5 trustee,” said Adam Spickler, current president of the Board of Trustees. “We hope to see many community members attending our appointment session.”
The seat became open when Felipe Hernandez was elected to the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors in November.
The selection of the Provisional Trustee will take place once a board majority of four members selects one of the candidates at the meeting.
Rebecca Garcia gets my vote. She knows how Cabrillo runs and was an educator for many years at Cabrillo.
My choice for trustee is well known. I will listen to all the candidates, however, in fairness to all of them. this will be the first trustee meeting at our Watsonville campus in a LONG time.
Ideally at this meeting there will be some discussion of removing Trujillo from the board. He continues to embarrass Cabrillo with his inane comments and inept writing.
Nope, I do not know ST’s choice, nor do I care. If other board members know of his choice, I recommend choosing either of the other two.
