The Pajaro Valley High football team improved to 2-0 in league play following a dominating 46-10 win over Santa Cruz High in Pacific Coast Athletic League Santa Lucia action Oct. 5.
Brian Flores had a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Grizzlies, who exploded for 46 unanswered points in the first half. The standout running back scored from 6- and 1- yards out.
In the first quarter, Jose Perez had a 4-yard rushing TD and David Salgado scored from 21-yards out for PV.
Toni Bahena forced a fumble on a kickoff and recovered it for a touchdown for Pajaro Valley in the second quarter. On the ensuing kick off, the special teams unit recovered an onside kick attempt.
The offense capitalized with a touchdown reception by Izaak Ocampo, and Eddie Mendoza had a rushing touchdown that gave the Grizzlies a 46-0 lead going into halftime.
Pajaro Valley (3-3, 2-0) hosts Harbor (1-4, 0-2) in league play Oct. 12 at 12:30pm.

Monterey 42, at Aptos 12: Ryan Solorio and Dylan Guisado each scored one rushing touchdown for the Mariners in a loss to the Toreadores in PCAL Gabilan Division play Oct. 4.
Solorio finished with 53 rushing yards on 23 carries, and Guisada had 24 rushing yards on six carries. Aptos (3-3, 0-2) plays against Palma (3-3, 0-2) at Rabobank Stadium in Salinas on Oct. 11 at 7pm.
At Alisal 24, Monte Vista Christian 14: Dominic Pierini had 275 passing yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions for the Mustangs in a loss to the Trojans in PCAL Mission–North Division play Oct. 4.
Nico Downie hauled in eight receptions for 145 yards and one touchdown, while Jordan Ramirez had five receptions for 90 yards and one TD. Ramirez also recorded an interception on defense.
Gunner Sorensen led MVC in tackles with 15 and forced one fumble, while fellow teammate Boston Ashe recovered the loose ball.
The Mustangs (2-4, 0-2) host Scotts Valley (2-4, 1-1) in league play Oct. 11 at 7:30pm.
St. Francis 31, at Watsonville 21: Sharks starting quarterback Javier Fonseca continued to make a stronger case on his candidacy for player of the year. He recorded two total touchdowns and a pair of interceptions in a thrilling win over the Wildcatz in PCAL Mission Division–North Division play Oct. 5.
The game was originally scheduled for Oct. 4, but a power outage on campus forced both teams to play on a Saturday afternoon.
Fonseca put the Sharks on the scoreboard with a 35-yard strike to Robert Gomez Jr., followed by a 27-yard rushing touchdown that tied the score at 14-all going into halftime.
Joseph Dayritt gave St. Francis its first lead of the game following a 76-yard sprint into the end zone that made it 21-14 with 5:36 remaining in the third quarter.
The ‘Catz struck first when Abraham Martinez scored from 5 yards out with 11 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Luis Marquez extended the lead at 14-0 after he hauled in a 21-yard reception for a touchdown.
Martinez was injured in the second half and did not return for the remainder of the game, while Marquez seriously injured his right knee and left the game in an ambulance late in the fourth quarter.
Watsonville senior Nate Aguilar recorded an interception on defense, and had a 35-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Miller-Brown, tying the score at 21-all in the third quarter.
Aidan Barrelleza-Hernandez knocked in a 34-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to give the Sharks a cushion at 24-21. Moments later, Fonseca recorded his second interception of the afternoon in the fourth quarter.
The turnover led to a 7-yard rushing TD by Dayritt that put the dagger into Watsonville (3-3, 1-1), which plays at Seaside (0-5, 0-2) in league action Oct. 11 at 7:30pm.
St. Francis (5-1, 2-0) heads into a bye week before it plays at Alisal (2-3, 1-0) on Oct. 18 at 7:30pm.
College football
San Jose 32, at Cabrillo 13: Aptos High alumnus Rio Cruz hauled in a pair of touchdown catches for the Seahawks in a loss to the Jaguars in the teams’ American Conference Golden Coast Division opener Oct. 5.
Cruz scored on a 21-yard pass from Jamari Vaughns early in the fourth quarter, followed by a 13-yard TD that cut the deficit to 25-13 with 3:28 remaining in the game.
He finished with four receptions for 49 yards and the two touchdowns for Cabrillo (0-4, 0-1), which plays at West Hills Coalinga in conference play Oct. 12 at 1pm.
Flag football
Watsonville 18, at King City 16: Fernanda Lazo tossed three touchdowns for the Wildcatz in their win over the Mustangs in PCAL Gabilan Division action Oct. 2.
Stephanie Martinez, Isa Alvarez, Aliah Anaya each had one touchdown reception for Watsonville (4-12, 3-5), which hosts Alvarez on Oct. 7 at 6:15pm.
Girls tennis
Aptos 7, at Harbor 0: Aviana Andrews, Coral Collins and Isabella Calderon each won their singles matches in straight sets, and the Mariners beat the Pirates in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League action Oct. 1.
Natalia Calderon and Charlotte Long won in their No. 1 doubles match, while fellow teammates Gia Arista and Neci Hoeptner were victorious at No. 2 doubles. Aptos (4-2, 3-0) plays at Soquel in league play Oct. 8 at 4:30pm.
Scotts Valley 6, at Soquel 1: Aila Papadopoulos, Sofia Niklaus, Erin Szymanksi and Ava Keller each swept their singles matches, and the Falcons beat the Knights in SCCAL action Oct. 3.
In doubles action, Scotts Valley’s tandem of Maya Wexler and Riya Kuriakose won at No. 1 in a third set tiebreaker. Seniors Skylar Dufour and Dillon Fiorita combined for a sweeping victory at No. 2 for Scotts Valley (3-2, 2-1), which hosts Harbor on Oct. 8 at 4pm.
Girls volleyball
St. Francis 3, at Notre Dame 0: Senior middle blocker Carley Anderson had eight aces and five kills for the Sharks in a three-set (25-13, 25-18, 25-20) win over the Spirits in PCAL Cypress Division action Oct. 3.
Junior setter Georgia Otzman had 10 aces and junior outside hitter Peyton Orradre finished with 11 aces for St. Francis (11-6, 3-3), which plays at Rancho San Juan (5-9, 4-2) in league play Oct. 7 at 6pm.
Greenfield 3, at St. Francis 1: Junior setter Georgia Otzman had a team-best 15 assists for the Sharks in a four-set (25-21, 25-12, 24-26, 25-16) loss to the Bruins in PCAL Cypress Division play Oct. 1.
Fellow teammate Julie Lopez had 10 assists, while junior outside hitter Peyton Orradre and senior middle blocker Carley Anderson had eight and six kills, respectively.
Men’s soccer
At Cabrillo 7, Monterey Peninsula 0: Luca Venturoli recorded three goals for the Seahawks in their shutout victory over the Lobos in Coast Conference action Oct. 4.
Yoan Ponio had one goal and one assist, while Eduardo Alvarez, Luis Carrasco and Dempsey Miller each notched one goal. Kelian Freeman had two assists, and fellow teammate Daniel Cardenas had one assist for Cabrillo (4-2-2, 2-0-0), which hosts West Valley in conference play Oct. 8 at 7:30pm.
At Cabrillo 1, Gavilan 0: Yoan Ponio notched the game-winning goal for the Seahawks in a win against the Rams in the teams’ Coast Conference opener on Oct. 1. Eddie Alvarez was credited with the assists, while goalkeepers Carlos Bajaras and Angel Edgar each had one save for Cabrillo.
Games of the Week
Cabrillo vs. West Valley, men’s soccer, Tuesday at 7:30pm: It will be an early battle of the unbeatens in Coast Conference play for both the Seahawks (4-2-2, 2-0-0) and Vikings (4-2, 2-0).
Aptos vs. Harbor, flag football, Wednesday at 7pm: The Mariners (9-2, 5-0) are coming off a tough non-league loss to Los Gatos and back into SCCAL action with a meeting against the Pirates (1-6, 1-4) at Trevin Dilfer Memorial Field in Aptos.
Watsonville vs. Alvarez, girls volleyball, Thursday at 6pm: The Wildcatz (11-5, 5-1) continue to be in the mix for a PCAL Mission Division title but they’ll have to get past an Eagles (8-13, 2-5) team that is struggling in league play this season.
Monte Vista Christian vs. Scotts Valley, prep football, Friday at 7:30pm: The Mustangs (2-4, 0-2) are hoping to bounce back following two consecutive losses in PCAL Mission Division North Division play. They’ll be going up against a depleted Falcons (2-4, 1-1) squad who is coming off a 28-7 win over Seaside.
Pajaro Valley vs. Harbor, prep football, Saturday at 12:30pm: After a 2-0 start in PCAL Santa Lucia Division play, the Grizzlies (3-3, 2-0) are hoping to keep things rolling against the Pirates (1-4, 0-2) in an afternoon contest at the “Grizzly Den”.
