Two weeks after Pajaro Valley Unified School District’s governing board rejected cuts to more than 100 positions districtwide, the discussion is coming back Tuesday night to be reconsidered.
According to Board President Olivia Flores, an item can be brought back for a revote if a dissenting member requests it.
Flores declined to comment on which trustee made the request.
“I hope that whatever is best for the students is done,” she said.
The trustees rejected the cuts after an hours-long meeting on Feb. 12, during which dozens of teachers, students and community members implored the board not to approve them.
Some of the cuts were recommended by the district’s Sustainable Budget Team—a group convened to help balance the budget after the district spent one-time funds on ongoing staff positions.
But others were an attempt to “right-size” overstaffing in the face of declining enrollment, under which PVUSD is expected to lose 600 students next year.
Also included in Tuesday’s discussion is a proposal to “restructure” positions in the district’s Curriculum and Instruction department, which would reshape the department without the need for layoffs.
PVUSD Superintendent Heather Contreras told the board that if they did not make the cuts, the budgetary problems would be twice as large when the issue returned next year.
