A little more than one week after voting to eliminate roughly 80 teacher positions, the Pajaro Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees will reconsider the issue during a special meeting Monday, the district announced Friday evening.

The vote on Dec. 11 took place without discussion after newly appointed Board President Carol Turley cleared the Watsonville City Chambers and proceeded without the public present.

The decision has since garnered scorn from many members of the public who said they signed up to speak and were not given the chance.

Turley told The Pajaronian that she requested the item be brought back for a more in-depth conversation.

“I’ve always been an advocate for listening to the public,” she said.

Turley explained that she felt rushed to complete the agenda by midnight after the board voted down a motion to extend the meeting until 2am.

She added that the audience, which she admonished several times to stop interrupting the proceedings, was “out of control.”

To revisit a vote, one board member who voted in favor must request it.

Trustees Misty Navarro, Olivia Flores, Joy Flynn, Jessica Carrasco and Turley voted in favor, and Gabe Medina and Daniel Dodge, Jr. dissented.

The meeting is scheduled for Dec. 22 at 6pm in the district office boardroom at 294 Green Valley Road in Watsonville.
