The 40th Annual Central Coast High School All-Star Football Game was a one-sided affair as Team White crushed Team Black, 42-0, at Rabobank Stadium in Salinas on Jan. 31. 

North Salinas senior Canelo Gonzales and Hollister senior Jordan Quezada each hauled in one touchdown reception from Stevenson senior quarterback Fin Mink.

North Salinas senior Kamari Hunter, Pacific Grove senior Garrett Kuska and Hollister senior Cruz Raquet each added one rushing touchdown.

On defense, Alvarez senior Adin Carmona and Soquel senior Isaiah Martinez each recorded a pick six.

Rancho San Juan senior Ke Koa Ponce had one interception for Team White, which was led by his former skipper in Trailblazer head coach Andrew Zarate.

Watsonville High’s Abraham Martinez, Anthony Landa, Mathew Silva, Luis Marquez Jr. and Lisandro Pantoja, along with St. Francis’ Jacob Jimenez and Coy Jordan also played under Zarate.

Aptos’ Scott Catesi, Korey Callahan-Cade and Gavin McDonald, and Pajaro Valley’s Eddie Estrada and Mario Ramirez played under Alisal head coach Francisco Estrada.

Boys basketball

Aptos 41, at Scotts Valley 31: Zane Matlow had five rebounds in the Mariners’ win against the Falcons in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play Tuesday night.

Teammate Caden Bogle finished with three assists for Aptos (10-13, 6-3), which plays at San Lorenzo Valley (5-15, 0-9) on Friday at 7:30pm.

The SCCAL end-of-season tournament begins Feb. 9.

Monte Vista Christian 68, at Seaside 55: Jeremy Silver had a team-best 15 points in the Mustangs’ win over the Spartans in Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division action Tuesday evening.

Teammate Matteo Vidal added nine points, while Jerry Arceo Jr. and Go Kamishita each contributed eight points.

Max Arce finished with six points for the Mustangs, who improved to 8-2 in league play this season.

They are in a tight race for the Cypress Division crown with North Salinas (15-5, 8-2) and Soledad (12-7, 8-1).

MVC (15-5, 8-2) will host Pacific Collegiate in league play on Thursday at 7pm.

Pajaro Valley 69, Ceiba 20: Sophomore guard Alan Cervantes had a game-best 19 points in the Grizzlies’ victory over the Spartans in PCAL Santa Lucia Division play Monday evening.

Teammate sophomore Jonathan Aguirre contributed 10 points, while junior Adrian Valdez added eight points for the Grizzlies, who improved to 8-1 in league play this season.

Pajaro Valley (8-11, 8-1) hosts Kirby Prep in a battle for first place in the Santa Lucia Division on Wednesday at 6pm. 

At St. Francis 73, Marina 52: Junior Isaiah Villalobos had a game-best 22 points in the Sharks’ win over the Mariners in PCAL Mission Division play Tuesday night.

Teammate senior Jacob Jimenez finished with 20 points, while senior Robert Gomez Jr. added 15 points.

St. Francis (9-10, 4-4) plays at Stevenson (5-16, 2-7) on Thursday at 7pm. 

Girls basketball

At Scotts Valley 60, Aptos 36: Sophomore guard Isa Alvarez finished with a team-best 18 points in the Mariners’ loss to the Falcons in SCCAL play Tuesday night. 

Teammate senior Rachel Beck Davis added six points for Aptos (12-11, 5-4), which closes out the regular season at San Lorenzo Valley (6-11, 2-6) on Friday at 5:30pm.

The SCCAL end-of-season tournament begins Feb. 9.

At Pajaro Valley 49, Seaside 16: Senior Monique Ayala had a game-best 18 points in the Grizzlies’ blowout win against the Spartans in PCAL Cypress Division play Tuesday night.

Teammate sophomore Elizabeth Zamora added 12 points, while senior Olivia Contreras contributed 11 points for the Grizzlies, who improved to 8-1 in league play this season.
Pajaro Valley (12-6, 8-1) plays at Pacific Collegiate (16-3, 8-1) in a battle for first place in the Cypress Division on Thursday night. Tipoff is slated for 7pm.

Hollister 60, at Watsonville 43: Senior forward Leilani Yasin finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, six blocks and five steals in the Wildcatz’s loss against the Haybalers in PCAL Gabilan Division play Tuesday night. 

Teammate senior Stephanie Martinez added 18 points and five steals for Watsonville (10-10, 5-5), which plays at Pacific Grove (7-13, 2-8) on Thursday at 7pm.  

Youth basketball

Jackson All-Stars sign ups announced: Pajaro Valley girls’ basketball head coach Darren Jackson announced sign up dates for the Jackson All-Stars travel basketball team for children ages 7-17.

The first day is set for March 13 from 5-7:30pm, followed by March 14 from 11am-2:30pm. Sign ups will take place at Round Table Pizza at 1457 North Main Street in Salinas.

Boys soccer

Aptos 2, at Santa Cruz 2: David Sebastian Killpatrick’s late goal helped the Mariners in a draw against the Cardinals in SCCAL play Monday evening.  

“I’m very proud of our boys as they kept their focus, battled through adversity and determination turning the game from an 0-2 deficit to a 2-2 tie,” Aptos head coach Roberto Zúñiga said. “Which showed grit and composure from our boys who battled for 80 solid minutes tonight.”

Damian Garcia zipped a driven pass to Killpatrick who saw the ball coming at high speed, but redirected it with a left kick into the back of the net that tied the score at 2-all in the 65th minute.

Santa Cruz drew first blood in the 24th, and followed up with a second goal in the 30th minute for a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

Zúñiga said they regrouped during the break, made some modifications to the lineup and played a lot more like a connected unit.

Five minutes into the second half, Garcia slipped a pass to Killpatrick who took a shot from the inside of the penalty area for the goal, cutting the deficit at 2-1.

“We were in the driver’s seat and battled it out, creating many chances up until the final whistle,” Zúñiga said.

Aptos (9-2-2, 3-1-2) will host San Lorenzo Valley on Wednesday at 7pm.

St. Francis 3, at York 0: Colton Stevens, Luis Jimenez-Saenz and Moises Barrelleza-Camerena each recorded one goal in the Sharks’ shutout victory over the Hawks in PCAL Cypress Division play Monday afternoon. 

Jimenez-Saenz and Barrelleza-Camerena each were also credited with one assist for St. Francis (7-5-0, 5-4-0), which hosts Anzar on Wednesday and Oakwood on Friday. Both matches are slated to kick off at 3:30pm.

At Watsonville 8, Seaside 0: Justin Alfaro and Damian Moreno each recorded a hat trick in the Wildcatz’s blowout win over the Spartans in PCAL Mission Division play Tuesday night.

Teammate Diego Guillen had one goal and three assists, while Elisco Mora added one goal for the ‘Catz—winners of 11 straight.

Watsonville (14-1-1) remains undefeated at 9-0 in Mission Division play with three matches remaining in the regular season. They’ll have a chance to clinch a league crown at Gonzales (11-2-3, 6-1-1) on Thursday at 5:45pm.

Girls volleyball

Zeng steps down at Aptos: Hunter Zeng announced Monday that he will step down from his role as head coach for the Aptos girls’ volleyball program.

“My time at Aptos has been an incredibly rewarding part of my life,” Zeng said in a press release.

Zeng, who spent five seasons at the helm, said in his press release he’s moving on to a new position he believes is a strong fit for him.

“While I am excited for what lies ahead, leaving this community is bittersweet, and I will genuinely miss being a steward of this program,” he said. 

High school wrestling

League championships set for this weekend: Aptos High will be home to the SCCAL Championships set for Friday at 2pm. Watsonville High will host the PCAL Finals on Saturday at a time to be determined.

NBA G League

Oklahoma City 130, Santa Cruz 110: Guard Franco Miller Jr. finished with a career-high 25 points and six assists in the Warriors’ loss to the Blue at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City on Tuesday afternoon. 

Teammate Chance McMillian earned his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while guard Taevion Kinsey secured 16 points and five assists. 

Forward Jack Clark, forward Jacksen Moni, and guard Desmond Cambridge Jr. each scored 14 points for Santa Cruz, which played the first of a five-game road trip.

Bryce Thompson finished with a game-high 41 points for OKC, while teammate Anthony Pritchard recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. 

OKC guard Jabri Abdur-Rahim came off the bench to contribute 18 points, while forward Payton Sandfort contributed 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Guard Zahire Smith finished with 16 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Blue, who held on to their 20-point advantage until the final buzzer.

Santa Cruz (9-8) plays at the Memphis Hustle (3-13) for a pair of games on Feb. 11 and 12 at 8:30am and 5pm, respectively.
