Naval Support Activity Monterey is conducting a weeklong emergency readiness exercise that could bring increased military, police and emergency response activity around the installation.
The installation readiness and certification exercise runs Aug. 24-28 at various locations throughout NSA Monterey. Members of the public may see uniformed personnel, emergency vehicles and security activity, or hear activity associated with simulated incidents. Navy officials stressed that the exercises are planned and are not in response to a specific threat or real-world emergency.
The exercise is part of NSA Monterey’s Final Evaluation Problem, the capstone assessment in the Navy Installations Command’s training and certification cycle. It is designed to evaluate how well the installation responds to emergencies and other threats while protecting personnel, coordinating emergency responses and maintaining its mission.
“FEP lets us test that preparation under realistic conditions and make sure our people, procedures and partnerships work together when we need them,” NSA Monterey commanding officer Capt. Ryan Easterday said.
NSA Monterey is home to more than 15 tenant commands and provides primary support to the Naval Postgraduate School, Navy Research Laboratory and Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center. The installation includes more than 160 buildings on more than 626 acres.
Officials said some exercise scenarios could be visible or audible outside the installation. Residents and motorists are advised not to be alarmed, and NSA Monterey will provide updates if the exercise significantly affects traffic or the surrounding community.
