A woman who has spent more than four decades making care packages for new parents at Watsonville Community Hospital was feted for her work on Aug. 21.
The celebration, held in the hospital’s lactation room, had a dual purpose.
Joyce Pearce, who would turn 90 the following day, wore a sparkling crown and sat beside a giant happy birthday sign beside her husband, Glenn, daughter, Marion, and others who recognized not only her birthday but also her generosity in helping newborns of needy families.
For the past 43 years she has spearheaded the assembly of layettes—or care bundles—that include a handmade knitted blanket, a receiving blanket, a toy, pajamas, socks, a bilingual book and more that were presented to young families over the years.
“This is the most wonderful group in the world,” said Pearce, who lives in Aptos. “I am most honored to have helped families of humble beginnings.”
Pearce reckons that she has assembled hundreds of such packages.
“It’s about caring for these new, young families,” she said.
