Teammate senior middle blocker Amani Keller recorded 11 kills and one block for the Mustangs, who dropped to 3-7 in league play this season.

“We came up short against an energized Monterey squad, credit to them for making some great plays in high pressure moments,” said MVC head coach Hunter Zeng in an email. “We’ve got some work to do on our side but I am proud of the fight we brought throughout the course of a five set match.”

For the Mustangs, it was just the second match of the season that they went the distance to five sets. Zeng said they were grateful for the learning opportunity.

The Mustangs were coming off a three game win streak that included a nonleague win in four sets 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 25-23 against Soquel High on Oct. 8.

Junior outside hitter Jessie Ingram tallied 15 kills, eight digs and one ace for MVC, while Kolbach added six kills and three blocks.

Keller finished with eight kills and eight blocks, while senior setter Mayla Miller Spahn had a team-best 22 assists, eight digs and a pair of aces.

“The way we played tonight meant a lot to us,” said Zeng in an email after the match. “Even if we came up short, the joy with which we played and the composure we held throughout all four sets is a testament to our growth since the start of the season.”

Zeng added, “There were plenty of reasons to lose focus, including a fire drill at the beginning of the second set and a huge home crowd, but our players stepped up.”

Next up, MVC (7-8, 3-7) continues PCAL Gabilan Division play in Salinas against Palma (13-5, 5-4) on Oct. 22 at 6pm.
