Multiple people were killed and others injured in a shooting early Monday morning along Jetty Road in Moss Landing, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cmdr. Andres Rosas, the shooting occurred shortly after midnight on Nov. 2.
Sheriff’s deputies and detectives remained at the scene Monday morning investigating the shooting.
Jetty Road is a roughly half-mile paved roadway that branches off Highway 1 just north of the Elkhorn Slough bridge. The road winds behind coastal sand dunes before ending at a dirt parking area near the north jetty of Moss Landing Harbor and Moss Landing State Beach.
The area, just north of the small fishing community of Moss Landing, is a popular destination for birdwatchers, who come to observe the numerous species that inhabit the nearby wetlands and coastal habitat.
California State Parks Police closed Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach at the request of the Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said there was no ongoing threat to the Moss Landing community.
The Sheriff’s Office has not released the number of people killed or injured, their identities or any information about possible suspects.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting also remain unclear.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities said no additional information was immediately available.
