SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — Daniel Peterson, who was hired as the county’s first cannabis licensing manager in September, announced Wednesday that he is resigning from the position.

Citing professional and personal reasons, Peterson’s resignation is effective June 30.

“The county is in excellent position to regulate cannabis in a manner consistent with local values,” Peterson said. “I regret that I am unable to see the industry through to full operation, but I leave the work in the hands of capable and dedicated staff.”

During his tenure, Peterson helped Santa Cruz County become the leading California county when it comes to the responsible oversight of cannabis distribution and cultivation, spokesman Jason Hoppin said. Peterson became an expert on both nascent state cannabis regulations and longstanding local land use rules, and fostered positive working relationships with the Board of Supervisors, county staff and the local cannabis community.

“As the county’s first cannabis licensing manager, Dan created an excellent blueprint,” County Administrative Officer Carlos Palacios said. “We will miss his expertise and enthusiasm, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Peterson oversees a staff of four.

The county will immediately begin a search for a replacement, Hoppin said.
