CORRALITOS — The Corralitos Woman’s Club, founded in 1920, was started as an adjunct to Red Cross volunteer efforts by local women who just wanted to “do some work” to help the local community.
Starting with folding bandages during WWII to making scrapbooks and cake for the soldiers, over the years the organization has actively supported local schools and numerous charities.
The current members of the club take these volunteer commitments to heart and are planning their agenda for the 2017-2018 year.
As a highlight of this year’s charitable activities, and as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the club is expanding its campaign to produce “Knitted Knockers” for mastectomy patients across the valley. Club members and volunteers knit lightweight prostheses which are donated to patients via local hospitals, the Katz Cancer Center, or by direct referral.
On Thursday, Oct. 19 the club is hosting a Card and Games party and luncheon benefitting local scholarships.
Also, as a targeted need in support of recent hurricane victims, the club is collecting women’s business clothing and accessories, which will be sent to needy individuals.
The club is also planning fundraising activities for local scholarships and one “spotlight charity,” which will be announced in the near future.
Charitable donations for the club come from member donations, event space rentals and annual events such as the October Game Day, an upcoming wine tasting event, an annual Mystery Dinner (early 2018) and Country Store (May 2018).
