SALINAS — Bento “Ben” G. Nunes died surrounded by his family at his home in Salinas on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2017. He was 67.
A native of the Sao Jorge, Azores Islands, the family immigrated to the United States in 1959. He lived in Salinas for the last 30 years.
Mr. Nunes worked for 35 years as a supervising mechanic at various garbage disposal companies, the last being Tri-Cities Disposal. He would always be available to help family members with his mechanical skills or anything else they needed. His favorite pastime was fishing every weekend with his two sons.
Mr. Nunes is survived by his wife, Rosa, of the family home in Salinas; his two sons, James Nunes of Pacific Grove and William (Melissa) Nunes of Salinas; two step-children, Kathie Mifsud of Hollister and Tony Escobar of Salinas; two brothers, Adalberto Nunes of Merced and George Nunes of Watsonville; three grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and two aunts.
Viewing and visitation will be Monday, Dec. 4, from 10-10:30 a.m. at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Watsonville. The Rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m. and Mass to follow also at the church. Burial will be at Valley Public Cemetery. Mehl’s Colonial Chapel has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
