WATSONVILLE — A state-appointed mediator has been assigned to help Pajaro Valley Unified School District and Pajaro Valley Federation of Teachers work through contract negotiations.

PVFT declared an impasse in December after the district refused demands by the teachers for a salary increase retroactive to the 2016-17 school year.

The first mediation session is scheduled for Jan. 31.

If mediation proves unsuccessful, the parties proceed to fact-finding, in which a three-person panel considers arguments from both sides and makes recommendations on how to resolve the impasse.
