Kailey Morrell recorded a hat trick to lead the Monte Vista Christian Mustangs over Monterey High in a 3-1 Monterey Bay League Pacific division victory on Friday night.

Emily Edgerle dished an assist, and Syerra Montes made five saves for M.V.C. (6-3-3, 3-1-1), which hosts North Salinas High on Wednesday night at 5:45 p.m.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

• St. Francis 72, Santa Cruz 62 – Chase Watkins had 29 points and six rebounds, Jason Gallo added 18 points and 12 rebounds and St. Francis High rallied from down eight at the half to knock off Santa Cruz High in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League action on Friday night.

Andrew Seymour hit five 3-pointers to finish with 15 points. E.J. Kelly dished seven assists.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

• MVC 64, Trinity 11 – The Monte Vista Christian Mustangs cruised to a non-league win over Trinity Christian on Saturday.

Aleah Rafat had 15 points and five rebounds, and Madison Hill finished with 12 points and five boards. Angelina Cortes and Mackenzie Tellez had eight points apiece for M.V.C. (9-8).

The Mustangs return to the court on Thursday against Gilroy High at 7 p.m.

• St. Francis 50, Santa Cruz 49 – Janiya Sevilla scored 19 points to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career in St. Francis High’s SCCAL win over Santa Cruz High on Friday night.

Janessa Yniguez added 12 points for St. Francis.

WOMEN’S JC BASKETBALL

• Cabrillo 80, De Anza 43 – Grace Giguiere (20), Teal Maixner (17) and Pauli Pappas (17) all scored in double figures to lead Cabrillo College over De Anza College in Coast Conference South division play on Friday night.

Lauren Lacy added nine points, 12 assists and six rebounds for Cabrillo (15-2, 5-0), which welcomes in Mission College on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

WRESTLING

• Pena takes second – Watsonville High’s Abel Pena finished runner-up in the 122-pound bracket of the 54th annual Overfelt Classic on Saturday evening.

Pena lost to Gilroy High’s Nic Aguilar by 17-2 technical fall in the championship match.

Monte Vista Christian’s Amman Klair finished third in the 140-pound bracket, beating Leigh High’s Grant Kaiser via a 9-1 major decision.

Fellow Mustang, Anthony Shepard took fifth at 287 pounds with a 1-0 decision over Westmont High’s Colin Daniel.

Aptos High’s Keegan Dutton-Jones also placed fifth in his respective weight bracket by edging San Benito High’s Eric Fernandez, 5-1, at 184 pounds.

M.V.C. finished 14th as a team with 60 points. Aptos was 24th (36) and Watsonville took 26th (34).
