WATSONVILLE — A Watsonville resident is warning others to be on the lookout for a scam apparently targeting undocumented immigrants.

Denny Greer, who was a San Jose Fire Captain for 30 years, said he received a prerecorded call early Thursday afternoon falsely warning him that he was in the U.S. illegally, and ordering him to call a phone number immediately.

The phone number had a 408 area code, Greer said.

The call further warned that failing to do so would land him in front of “a magistrate,” Greer said.

In a separate incident, a scammer targeted a Watsonville resident early Friday morning, this time claiming to be from the IRS.

In this common scam, callers purporting to be IRS agents tell victims they owe back taxes and will be arrested unless they pay immediately.

The IRS doesn’t contact taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information. The same is true with federal immigration officials.
