Christian Quintero’s high-scoring efforts did not go unnoticed by the coaches of the Monterey Bay League Pacific division.
The Pajaro Valley High star guard was named the league’s Sophomore of the Year and also earned a spot on the MBL-Pacific division First Team, the league announced on Sunday.
Pajaro Valley senior forward Tony Reyes also made the league’s first team.
Quintero, the Freshman of the Year last season, averaged 22.2 points per game over 25 contests, a mark that was second-best in the entire Central Coast Section, according to the stats kept by MaxPreps.
The 5-foot-11 scoring machine shot an efficient 47 percent from the field. He also shot 35 percent from beyond the arc and 75 percent from the charity stripe.
He also averaged 4.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.4 steals per game.
Quintero led an undersized Pajaro Valley team to a third-place finish in the MBL-Pacific division at 7-5.
The Grizzlies also made the Central Coast Section playoffs for the second straight season.
Pajaro Valley finished the season with a 13-12 overall record.
Quintero played the best ball of his young high school career down the final stretch of the year. He scored 20 points or more in each of the last 11 games of the season, and had five games in which he scored 30 or more.
Reyes, a wiry 6-foot-2 forward, averaged 12.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.2 blocks per game.
Seaside High senior guard Matthew Briscoe was named the MBL-Pacific division M.V.P. and Spartans’ coach Wayne Garnett earned Coach of the Year honors.
Seaside won the league title, its first since 2014, with a 10-2 record.
Gilroy High’s Drew Gumin was named the Freshman of the Year.
Watsonville High senior guard Noel Magana made the league’s second team along with Pajaro Valley senior Ryan Magbag.
Watsonville senior guard Isaiah Mendoza and Pajaro Valley junior wing Juan Lira made the league’s All-Defense team.
Watsonville junior Lucas Rivas and Pajaro Valley senior Jaylen Carreon earned honorable mention.
GABILAN
Monte Vista Christian seniors Lucas Schmidt and Miles Greene each earned a spot on the MBL-Gabilan division First Team, the league announced on Sunday.
Schmidt and Greene guided M.V.C. to a fourth-place finish in the league at 7-5.
The duo also helped the Mustangs to their ninth straight CCS postseason berth.
M.V.C. finished 15-9 overall.
Schmidt, a 6-foot-9 center headed to NCAA Division I North Dakota on scholarship, averaged 11.3 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game en route to his second straight first team honor.
He also made the league’s All-Defense team.
Greene, a slashing 6-foot-1 guard, led the Mustangs in points (12.9) and assists (2.8) this season.
Alisal High junior guard Josue Gil-Silva and senior forward Adriano Betancourt were named the league’s co-M.V.P.s and Trojans coach Jose Gil earned the Coach of the Year.
Alisal won the Gabilan with a 10-2 record.
M.V.C. senior wing Aidan Ezeji-Okoye made the league’s second team, and senior point guard Riley Kafka made the sportsmanship team.
