Mt. Madonna started off the weekend with a sweep of a league rival and wrapped it up with a perfect day in the Battle of the Bay.
The Hawks swept Aptos, 25-18, 25-14, 28-26, on Friday night in a Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League match and plowed through tough competition in a tournament at Aptos on Saturday.
Mt. Madonna (7-1, 2-0) beat Madera South, Aptos, Harbor and Carlmont.
The Hawks return to SCCAL action on Wednesday at San Lorenzo Valley High at 6:30 p.m.

HS SOFTBALL
• Watsonville 4, Aptos 1- Juliana Wilson and Anastacia Alba each hit a home run and Watsonville improved to 3-0 on Friday.
Jessica Rodriguez struck out 11 batters and allowed only one hit, a Martina Churchill homer in the second inning.
The Wildcatz travel to Mountain View to play St. Francis on Friday at 4 p.m.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
• Aptos takes home wins – The Aptos 4×100-meter relay team of Kylie Bennett, Kaela A. Hemingway, Sachi Land and Emma Burke took first in 51.31 seconds at Saturday’s Wildcat Relays in Watsonville.
The Mariners’ triple jump team of Brynn Mitchell (3rd, 35 feet, 0.5 inches), Rebecca Sampson (4th, 32-8.75) and Land (7th, 31-5.5) also recorded a win for Aptos, which finished third as a team.
North Monterey County was fourth as a team. Jocelyn Cazarez was first in the discus (106-1), and Katelyn James (85-6) and Nia Nisby (74-11) helped the Condors discus relay win. Cazarez also took second in the shot put (32-0.5).
Watsonville finished 10th. The Wildcatz impressed in the running medleys, taking second in the distance medley (13:38.84) and third in the 1,600 (4:27.09) with the team of Layla Ruiz, Annah Ramirez, Carolina Avalos, April Alvarado and Daniela Salazar.
St. Francis was 15th. The Sharks got a solid day from Samantha Bellucci, who took second in the high jump (5-10), fifth in the triple jump (32-8.75), and eight in the long jump (14-4.5).
Pajaro Valley placed 19th.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD
• Austen stars for Aptos – Aptos thrower Alex Austen won individually and helped his team to a win at Saturday’s Wildcat Relays in Watsonville.
Austen’s toss of 43-5 in the shot put was good enough for first, and his second-best toss in the discus of 125-8 aided the Mariners discus relay team to take first. Nathan Arellano (112-0) and Brandon Garrison (98-3) were on the winning discus team with Austen.
Aptos finished seventh as a team.
North Monterey County was fifth, host Watsonville took eighth, St. Francis placed 17th and Pajaro Valley rounded out the locals in 17th.

HS BASEBALL
• Watsonville sweeps North Salinas – Watsonville opened up its Monterey Bay League Pacific division season with a pair of wins over North Salinas last week. The Wildcatz won the first game 8-5, and the second 6-2.
In the first meeting, which was delayed for darkness on Wednesday, Watsonville won with three runs in the ninth inning. Dylan Vargas was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two scored runs. Gio Gonzalez also scored a pair of runs. Ryan Rivera picked up the win after 5 and 1/3 innings in relief. He allowed only two hits and walked seven while striking out nine.
On Friday, Watsonville scored a pair in the fifth and sixth innings to rally past the Vikings. Rivera was 3-for-4 with a double and two scored runs. Maximilian Ramirez IV went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two stolen bases and a scored run. Ramirez also picked up the win on the mound, surrendering four hits and walking seven. He struck out 13 batters.
• San Benito 5, MVC 4 – Garret Laine homered and scored a pair of runs in Monte Vista Christian’s MBL-Gabilan division heartbreaker against defending champ San Benito on Friday.
Ian Koenig doubled, walked twice and scored a run for M.V.C. (3-4, 0-3), which hosts the Balers today at 4 p.m.

JC BASEBALL
• Cabrillo 10, Skyline 5 – Cabrillo amassed 14 hits in its Coast Conference Pacific division win over Skyline on Saturday afternoon.
Digger Gugale was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a scored run. Kia Moody went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Jake Keaschall, Jonah Shabry and Easton Vidales doubled.
Tyler Biersdorff picked up the win in a relief effort, going five innings and allowing seven hits, three runs and two walks. He struck out six.
Cabrillo (7-14, 2-1) welcomes in Sierra College today at 2:30 p.m.
