Rose Society schedules potluck

WATSONVILLE — The Monterey Bay Rose Society’s April meeting will be held at a new location.

The group will meet at the Monterey Bay Rose Society Display Rose Garden at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, 2601 East Lake Ave., Saturday at 10 a.m.

The potluck luncheon is for members and non-members and free to all. Attendees are asked to bring a potluck dish. 

“How Do Our Roses Grow” will be the topic of the meeting, which will include a walk through of the roses with a discussion about the variety of roses the group grows.

SACO holding annual dinner

WATSONVILLE — The Slavic American Cultural Organization (SACO) is inviting the public to its Annual Rack of Lamb Dinner at Moreland Notre Dame Gymnasium, 133 Brennan St. in Watsonville, on April 21 at 4 p.m. 

Social hour is followed by dinner. Adult tickets are $30 and children under 12 are $10.

Take out is available at 6 p.m., and no tickets will be sold at the door. Reservations must be made by April 18.

Watsonville Community Band presents Spring Concert series

WATSONVILLE — The Watsonville Community Band’s 70th Spring Concert series returns April 22 at 2 p.m. at the Henry J. Mello Center, 250 East Beach St.

The band will perform selections from “Phantom of the Opera,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “West Side Story” and more.

The Watsonville Community Band Youth Band will also perform.

The next concert in the series will continue on May 6 at 3 p.m. at Peace United Church, 900 High St. in Santa Cruz.

Candidate campaign filing workshop scheduled

SANTA CRUZ — The Santa Cruz County Clerk is hosting a Candidate Campaign Filing Workshop presented by the staff from the Fair Political Practices Commission on Thursday from 7-9 p.m., on the fifth floor in the Board Chambers located at 701 Ocean St. in Santa Cruz.

The workshop is designed for candidates and campaign treasurers. Topics will include initial campaign activities, contributions and expenditures, reporting requirements, advertising disclaimers and post-election tasks.

“This is a unique opportunity for people in our region to have direct access to the state experts in our own community,” County Clerk Gail Pellerin said. “Navigating the laws governing campaign reporting can be difficult. It’s imperative that you know what you can and can’t do. You don’t want to make a mistake in reporting your campaign finances.”

There is no fee to attend the workshop.

Applications for Measure D Taxpayer Oversight Committee being accepted

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission is currently accepting applications from members of the community for the new Measure D Taxpayer Oversight Committee.

This independent oversight committee will be tasked with reviewing how the funds generated by the transportation tax are being spent.

The responsibilities of the committee will include:

• Reviewing expenditures on an annual basis to ensure they conform to the ordinance

• Reviewing the annual audit and report prepared by an independent auditor, describing how funds were spent

• Producing a publicly available Annual Report of Oversight Activities

Members of the Measure D Taxpayer Oversight Committee must be residents of Santa Cruz County who are neither elected officials of any government, nor employees from any agency or organization that either oversees or implements projects funded from the proceeds of the sales tax. The committee will be made up of community members that represent the geographical, social, cultural and economic diversity of Santa Cruz County to ensure maximum benefit for transportation users, and it shall include at least one person with an accounting or fiscal management background.
