A Central firefighter assists in lifting a man from the beach near 37th Avenue at East Cliff Drive Saturday morning in the Pleasure Point area. Despite efforts by citizens and emergency workers to resuscitate the man, who appeared to be on his 60s, he died at the scene of the ocean rescue. He had apparently been surfing when witnesses spotted him floating motionless in the water. Sgt. Brian Cleveland of the Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Richard Herrin, 54, of San Jose. The cause of death has not been released.
