CORRALITOS—The 59th annual Lumberjack Breakfast was held this morning at the Corralitos Community Center.

Hosted by the Corralitos Padres, the event benefits various youth organizations and groups of the area, including the Cub and Boy Scouts, 4-H, Girl Scouts and local sports leagues.

Padres volunteers were up before the sun rose to prepare for the event. Hungry families lined up from dawn until noon for pancakes, eggs, hash browns and more, enjoying their meal on tables set up beneath tall redwoods.

“It takes us about two weeks to set this up,” said Darwin Ernst, who cheekily dubs himself the “Bull Cook” of the morning. “It’s a lot of work!”

The history of the breakfast dates back to the formation of the Padres themselves. According to Ernst, volunteers used to cook on tiny camp stoves. Eventually, the event grew enough that more was needed. Some of the stoves being used today were hand-built from old army tanks.

By 8:30 a.m., the food line at the Community Center reached through the building and out towards Browns Valley Road. Tractor and horse-drawn wagons helped shuttle people parked far away. Boy Scouts offered coffee to those waiting in line, and old farm equipment was displayed on the front lawn, drawing the interest of onlookers.

Ernst admitted he would be definitely be ready to relax this afternoon, but is happy so many people showed up.

“So far, things have been going really well,” he said.
