WATSONVILLE — Walkers and runners of all ages and levels of athletic ability are invited to join Team Coco, runners and walkers who train and fundraise to support the Live Like Coco foundation, to participate in a Spring Fun Run.

The run will be held Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Pinto Lake County Park, 757 Green Valley Road in Watsonville. The event includes a free 1K for kids under 14 starting at 8:30 a.m. as well as a 5K and 10K for adults starting at 9 a.m. Race registration is $30 for the 5K, and $40 for the 10K.

The Spring Fun Run is being held to honor Coco Lazenby, a 12-year-old girl who was killed by a truck driver on Highway 1 in 2015. In recognition of Coco’s love for books and reading, every child that participates will receive a book at the finish line, a gift from the Live Like Coco Foundation, launched by Coco’s parents, Kate Pavao and Aaron Lazenby.

The event also includes a “Reading Flash Mob” at 11 a.m., where families are invited to read together in public, a reading by local children’s book author Tory Vincent, a seed bomb giveaway and more.

“Coco was a reader, a runner – and an activist for the planet and anyone who needed help,” Kate Pavao said. “I am so glad that we are hosting an event that celebrates so many things that she loved so close to her birthday.”

The money raised by Team Coco this season will be used to support the Live Like Coco Foundation and 15 other local nonprofits that support families and kids, including Digital NEST, Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services and Unchained. For a complete list, visit LiveLikeCoco.com.

Space is limited, but same day race registration will be offered if available. To register in advance and secure space, visit livelikecoco.com/funrun17.html.
