Firefighters from several agencies combat a wild land fire on the shoulder of Highway 1 just south of South Green Valley Road Monday in Watsonville. The 2:10 p.m. blaze ripped through about two acres of low brush and cast a plume of smoke over Highway 1. Firefighters had to shut down the slow lane of southbound Highway 1 for about two hours to allow for the arrival of more than 10 pieces of equipment and about 20 personnel. Watsonville Fire Chief Pablo Barreto said the fire appeared to have started in or around an outhouse. No injuries were reported.
