Ivan Zavala recorded one goal and one assist in Aptos’ 3-0 victory over Ceiba College Prep in non-league boys soccer action on Jan. 9. 

Zavala gave the Mariners an early lead with his score in the second minute, which was assisted by Josiah Siqueiros.

Siqueiros tallied his second assist of the evening on a pass to Hayden Agnello, who scored and extended the lead at 2-0 in the 63rd minute.

Teammate Noah Salik capped off the scoring in the 66th, while goalkeeper Habert Santiago-Toledo compiled four saves in front of the net.

Aptos head coach Roberto Zúñiga praised defenders David Sebastian Kilpatrick, Daniel Lozano, Isaiah Acevedo and Dereck Moran for their strong performance in the shoutout win. 

“The team keeps working on our offensive attack and we look forward to our next game,” Zúñiga said.

Aptos (6-1-1) hosts Santa Cruz in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League opener on Wednesday at 7pm.

At Monte Vista Christian 2, Rancho San Juan 0: Sai Patel and Patrick Tracey each had one goal in the Mustangs’ shutout win against the Trailblazers in Pacific Coast Athletic League  Cypress Division play on Monday.

Tracey and teammate Owen Watson each were credited with one assist for MVC (6-4-1, 2-1), which plays at North Monterey County (0-6-2, 0-2-1) in league play on Wednesday at 5:45pm.

Watsonville 7, at Seaside 0: Junior Justin Alfaro pulled off the hat trick in the Wildcatz’s crushing victory against the Spartans in PCAL Mission Division play on Monday evening.

Teammate Diego Guillen notched a pair of goals and recorded four assists for Watsonville, winners of five straight.

Teammates Damien Mora and Jesus Contreras-Barboza each contributed one goal and one assist, while Jose Ortiz had one assist.

Adrian Fernandez finished with five saves for Watsonville (8-1-1, 3-0), which hosts Gonzales in league play on Wednesday at 5:45pm.

At Watsonville 3, King City 1: Diego Guillen had one goal and a pair of assists to help lift the Wildcatz past the Mustangs in PCAL play Jan. 8. Jesus Contreras and Justin Alfaro each scored once for Watsonville.

Girls’ soccer

At Watsonville 5, Monte Vista Christian 1: Jackeline Cano’s hat trick performance helped lift the Wildcatz past the Mustangs in PCAL Mission Division play Monday evening. 

Teammates Shaylah Melendez and Alicia Ramirez each added one goal, while goalkeeper Esperanza Sigala recorded four saves in front of the net for Watsonville.

The Wildcatz (7-2, 3-0), winners of four straight, host Alisal (5-6-2, 0-2) on Friday at 5:45pm.

MVC (3-5-3, 0-2-1) hosts North Monterey County (2-9, 0-3) on Wednesday at 5:45pm. 

Boys’ basketball

At Monte Vista Christian 59, Seaside 39: Senior Jeremy Silver had a team-best 18 points, including four 3-pointers in the Mustangs’ win against the Spartans in PCAL Cypress Division play on Monday evening.

Teammate junior Matteo Vidal finished with 16 points, while Santino Matteucci contributed five points for MVC (9-4, 2-1), which plays at Pacific Collegiate on Wednesday at 5:30pm.

St. Francis 72, at Marina 52: Senior Robert Gomez Jr. erupted for 26 points, including seven 3-pointers in the Sharks’ win over the Mariners in PCAL Mission Division play on Monday evening.

Teammate junior Isiah Villalobos added 19 points, while senior Jacob Jimenez contributed 17 points for St. Francis (6-7, 1-1), which hosts Stevenson (4-10, 1-2) on Wednesday at 7pm.

Girls’ basketball

Pajaro Valley 49, at Seaside 16: Sophomore Elizabeth Zamora tallied a game-best 19 points in the Grizzlies’ blowout win over the Spartans in PCAL Cypress Division play Monday evening.

Monique Ayala finished with 14 points, while senior Olivia Contreras contributed nine points for Pajaro Valley (5-6, 2-1), which hosts Pacific Collegiate (11-2, 3-0) in league action Wednesday at 7pm. 

At Pajaro Valley 49, Gonzales 29: Olivia Contreras finished with a game-best 19 points in the Grizzlies’ win over the Spartans in PCAL Cypress Division play Jan. 8.

Teammate Monique Ayala added 12 points, while Angela Lopez contributed six points for Pajaro Valley.

At Hollister 55, Watsonville 40: Senior guard Stephanie Martinez finished with a team-best 18 points and four steals in the Wildcatz’s loss to the Haybalers in PCAL Gabilan Division play Monday evening.

Teammate Leilani Yasin recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four blocks for Watsonville (6-7, 1-2), which hosts Pacific Grove (4-8, 1-3) in league play on Wednesday at 7pm.

At Watsonville 45, Monterey 36: Senior guard Stephanie Martinez recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds in the Wildcatz’s victory over the Toreadores in PCAL Gabilan Division play Jan. 8.

Martinez also matched her school-record of nine assists to go along with seven steals. Teammate Itzury Vazquez contributed six points and six rebounds for Watsonville.
