Aptos senior Logan Brantley won the discus event with a toss of 169-feet, 6 inches in the open division at the prestigious Arcadia Track and Field Invitational on April 11-12. The Mariners’ standout athlete also placed 12th in the discus invitational division with a throw of 168-09, and took fourth in the shot put open division with a toss of 54-02.

Teammate sophomore Sam Hansen took second in the rising stars division’s one-mile race in 4 minutes, 14.57 seconds, while junior Brady Bliesner (1:57.69) placed 38th in the open division 800-meters. 

Pajaro Valley senior Izaak Ocampo leaped his way to a 14th place finish in the rising stars division’s long jump event with a jump of 21-02.

MVC’s Gilliam victorious at Kearney Invitational: Monte Vista Christian junior Conor Gilliam won the 800-meters in 1:57.60 at the 34th Annual Bill Kearney Track and Field Invitational at Salinas High School on April 12. 

Teammate junior Owen Bingham took second in the 300 hurdles in 48.24 and placed third in the 110 hurdles in 19.69, while senior Joshua Tepoorten was fifth in the 200 in 23.58.

Scotts Valley junior William von Haunalter placed fifth in both the 800 and 1600 in 2:13.29 and 4:51.54, respectively. 

Girls track and field

Local athletes excel at Kearney Invitational: Watsonville senior Katelynn Ruiz won the 3200-meters in 11:23.98 at the 34th Annual Bill Kearney Track and Field Invitational at Salinas High School on April 12.

Monte Vista Christian senior Kylie Brunielli (11:29.53) finished right behind Ruiz in second, while freshman Anna Conca won the 1600 in 5:14.58. Teammate junior Nylie Joneson won the pole vault with a mark of 7-06, and freshman Kylie Fitzpatrick took fifth in the 100 in 13.55 seconds.  

San Lorenzo Valley’s Orea Pollock, Naomi Seastrom and Skyla Leggett were all winners this past weekend. Leggett, a sophomore, won the 400 in 1:03.76 and was part of the 4×100 relay team [Emily Petrov, Pollock, Seastrom, Leggett] that won the race in 4:23.49. 

Seastrom won the 300 hurdles in 46.75 and took second in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.93, while Pollock leaped her way to victory in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet.

Scotts Valley junior Dylan Turzak won the 800 in 2:23.61, followed by Leggett (2:27.83) in second and Scotts Valley junior Jennifer Brownfield (2:34.23) in fourth.

Scotts Valley junior Ava Decleve competed in two events in the open division at the Arcadia Invitational on April 11-12. She placed fourth in the 800 in 2:12.48 and 45th in the 400 (59.27).

Hawks’ Hunnicutt flies high at Alisal Invitational: Mount Madonna senior Lagi Hunnicutt placed second in the girls’ triple jump and long jump events at the Alisal Track and Field Invitational on April 12. 

The Hawks’ standout athletes finished with jumps of 30-10 in the triple jump and 15-05 in the long jump. She also took sixth in both the 100- and 200-meters in 13.11 and 27.92 seconds, respectively. 

High school baseball

Monte Vista Christian 8, North Monterey County 4: Senior Tyson Shaw had three hits, including one double, one RBI and scored three runs in the Mustangs’ win over the Condors in Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division action April 11.

Teammate senior Dante Darnell also had three hits with one run scored, while sophomore Michael Melundo had a pair of hits, including one double and one RBI. Junior pitcher Jackson Haddad allowed four runs—two earned—on two hits and six walks while tallying five strikeouts, while sophomore Parker Brown had four strikeouts to record the save for the Mustangs.

MVC (12-3, 5-1) will host Evergreen Valley of San Jose in non-league play April 22 at 4pm.

High school softball

Watsonville 17, Greenfield 1 (5 innings): Senior pitcher Jillian Lerma allowed one run on three hits and three walks while tallying six strikeouts in the ‘Catz’s win over the Bruins at the Watsonville Wildcatz Tournament on April 12. 

Teammate junior Amelia Martinez had one home, four RBIs and two runs scored, while sophomore Esperanza Sigala had three hits, including a pair of doubles, four RBIs and one run scored.

Audrina Rodriguez, a freshman, also had three hits to go along with one RBI and a pair of runs scored for Watsonville, which improved to an 11-6 overall record this season.

Lerma picked up another victory in the circle that same afternoon in the ‘Catz’s 6-3 win against PCAL Gabilan Division-rival North Salinas. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits while recording three strikeouts in four innings pitched. Martinez was credited with the save, while freshman Bella Ruiz had a pair of hits, including one home run and four RBIs. 

Watsonville (11-6, 1-3) will host Alvarez in PCAL Gabilan Division action Wednesday at 4:30pm.

At Palma 4, Watsonville 3: Analysia Rocha hit a three-run walk-off home run to help lift the Chieftains past the Wildcatz in PCAL Gabilan Division play April 11. 

Junior pitcher Amelia Martinez allowed four earned runs on six hits and six walks while recording nine strikeouts in the loss for Watsonville, which dropped to 1-3 in league play this season.

Teammates senior Jillian Lerma, sophomore Esperanza Sigala, and freshmen Bella Ruiz and Audrina Rodriguez each had one base hit.
