
The Aptos High girls’ soccer team captured their fourth straight Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League championship banner following a 5-0 crushing win against Harbor High on Thursday night.
Isabella Hartnett pulled off the hat trick, giving her 22 goals on the season, while teammates Ava Marquez and Aubrie Ford each added one goal on Senior Night for Aptos.
Ford added a pair of assists, while teammate Emilie Santiago also finished with two assists. Goalkeeper Tayanna Bonilla had one save for Aptos, which capped off the 2025-26 regular season with a 10-0 record in SCCAL play.
“Great team performance and a special night celebrating our seniors,” Aptos head coach Gina Castañeda said.
Next up, the Mariners await for the Central Coast Section seeding meeting on Feb. 19. The quarterfinals begin Feb. 21.
Boys soccer
At Aptos 5, Scotts Valley 0: Aptos’ Josiah Siqueiros had a pair of goals in the Mariners’ shutout win over the Falcons in SCCAL play Wednesday night.
Haziel Parra, Julian Torres and Damian Garcia each added one goal for Aptos, which improved to 5-1-2 in league play this season.
Isaiah Acevedo added a pair of assists, while Torres, Zavala and River Cook each recorded one assist.
“The team continues to improve and capitalize out of the opponents mistakes,” Aptos head coach Roberto Zúñiga said. “I’m happy with our results and look forward to our next match.”
Next up, Aptos (11-2-3, 5-1-2) plays at Harbor in SCCAL action Friday at 7pm.
Boys basketball
Mustangs knocked out of league title race: Monte Vista Christian junior guard Matteo Vidal finished with a game-best 17 points but it wasn’t enough as the Mustangs fell to Soledad, 60-53, in Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division action Monday night.
With the loss, MVC dropped to 10-3 in league play and are no longer in contention for the Cypress Division crown.
The Mustangs bounced back two days later in a 69-56 win against Greenfield in league play Wednesday night. Senior Jeremy Silver had a game-best 24 points for MVC, while teammate senior Go Kamishita added 19 points.
MVC (17-6, 10-3) will host North Salinas in Cypress Division play for Senior Night on Friday at 7pm.
Sharks win fifth straight: St. Francis senior Robert Gomez Jr. finished with 23 points, including five 3-pointers as the Sharks defeated Hollister, 57-55, in PCAL Mission Division play Thursday night.
Gomez added five assists, while teammate Tahj Ibrahim recorded a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Sharks, who improved to 8-4 in league play this season. .
Senior forward Jacob Jimenez added eight points and seven rebounds for St. Francis—winners of five straight. They closed out the regular season with a 13-10 overall record.
Girls basketball
Mariners advance to SCCAL title game: Isa Alvarez exploded for 35 points to help lift No. 3 seed Aptos past No. 2 Santa Cruz, 59-37, in the SCCAL Tournament semifinals on Wednesday night.
Teammate Evie Francis added 13 points, while Emi Gansauer-Pilcher contributed eight points.
Aptos (15-11, 6-4) plays top-seeded Scotts Valley (23-1, 10-0) in the championship game at Cabrillo College on Saturday at 5pm.
Grizzlies keep league title hunt alive: Senior Monique Ayala had a game-best 16 points to help Pajaro Valley slip past Greenfield for a 42-40 victory in PCAL Cypress Division play Wednesday night.
Teammate senior Olivia Contreras had 14 points, while teammate sophomore Elizabeth Zamora added eight points for the Grizzlies, who improved to 11-2 in league play this season.
With the win, PV is currently tied with Pacific Collegiate for first place in the division standings.
Zamora finished with a game-best 14 points as the Grizzlies defeated Marina, 49-26 in league play Monday night.
Karley Alvarado contributed 12 points for PV (15-7, 11-2), which plays at North Salinas (12-11, 9-4) in Cypress Division play Friday at 7pm.
St. Francis 51, at Carmel 38: Sophomore guard Liliana Whitmeyer went off for 31 points in the Sharks’ victory over the Padres in PCAL Mission Division play Thursday night.
Whitmeyer added eight rebounds, two assists, three steals and four blocks, while teammate freshman Kaylie Lopez contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
St. Francis (11-11, 7-5) will host Anzar (11-9, 8-4) in nonleague play in the teams’ regular season finale Feb. 17 at 6pm.
At Soledad 53, Watsonville 44: Leilani Yasin recorded a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds in the Wildcatz’s loss to the Aztecs in PCAL Gabilan Division play Wednesday night.
Yasin added three assists, while teammate senior Stephanie Martinez finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four steals.
Itzury Vazquez contributed 11 points for Watsonville (11-12, 6-7), which hosts Stevenson (11-12, 5-8) in league play Friday at 7pm.
High school wrestling
Aptos boys wins SCCAL Tournament: After trailing 13-8 late in the match, Aptos’ Johnny Stoner battled his way back to pin Scotts Valley senior Micaiah Trujillo to capture the 144-pound title at the SCCAL Wrestling Championships on Feb. 6.
The Mariners captured the team title with a score of 160.5 points, followed by Santa Cruz (125) in second, Scotts Valley (94.5) in third, Soquel (88.5) in fourth, Harbor (73.5) in fifth and San Lorenzo Valley (67.5) in sixth place.
Next up, the Central Coast Section Southern Regionals tournament at Watsonville High on Feb. 14. The top eight wrestlers in each weight division advance to the Masters Finals, also in Watsonville on Feb. 21.
Aptos’ Dominic Cabot nearly went the distance before he pinned Levi Larsen of Soquel to win the 120-pound finals.
Cruz Contreras beat Noah Hart of Harbor via fall to claim the 132-pound title for Aptos, while teammate Cole Moules pinned Amadeo Dorsey of Santa Cruz to win the 165-pound title.
Aptos’ Preston Carvalho decisively won, 15-5, against Max Quale of Santa Cruz in the 150-pound championship bout.
Scotts Valley freshman Gio Vignato had the biggest upset of the evening with a stunning victory over Jack Moreno of Aptos in the 106-pound finals.
Vignato was trailing, 13-3, late in the match when he flipped the script and had Moreno on his back for the pin.
Aptos’ Bryson Silva fell to Scotts Valley freshman Carson Solbes in the 113-pound championship bout in a close 6-2 decision.
In the 138-pound finals, Aptos’ Alfred Cabot lost, 15-6, in a major decision to Kameron Mountain of Soquel.
On the girls side, Aptos Isabella Cruz was pinned by Julia Fodor-Weir of Santa Cruz in the 105-pound weight division finals, while Mariner teammate Nyssa Fagin fell to Onyx Escobar of Santa Cruz in the 140-pound championship.
‘Catz trio advances to CCS Regionals: Watsonville’s Angel Barragan, Mark Flores-Ortiz and Kaiden Peña each advanced to Saturday’s CCS Southern Regionals tournament at Watsonville High.
Barragan took third place in the 165-pound division, while Flores-Ortiz (150lbs) placed fourth in the 150-pound weight class. Peña finished sixth in the 144-pound division.
