Boys
Nico Downie (Sr.), Monte Vista Christian
Nico Downie broke a pair of MVC football records in last week’s 48-28 loss to Carlmont in non-league play Sept. 13.
Downie is the Mustangs’ newest all-time leader in career receiving yards with 2,238 and touchdown receptions (23). He surpassed Matt Griffin’s career mark of 1,992 yards receiving and Austin Daich’s record of 22 receiving touchdowns.
Downie finished with 261 yards receiving and two touchdowns on 12 receptions in Friday’s loss to the Scots. He has a team-best 526 yards receiving and five touchdowns on 25 receptions this season.
Next up, Downie and MVC (1-2) will host Alvarez (2-1) in the teams’ final non-league game of the season. Kickoff is slated for 7:30pm.
Girls
Fernanda Lazo (Sr.), Watsonville
Fernanda Lazo had 152 yards passing with four touchdowns for the Wildcatz girls’ flag football team in a crushing 41-0 win over Alvarez in Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division action Sept. 11.
Prior to that, Lazo got off to a nice start in league play with 200 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns for the ‘Catz in a 23-14 loss to King City in the teams’ Gabilan Division opener Sept. 9. She was the lone bright spot for Watsonville with 198 yards passing in a 32-0 loss to Aptos in non-league action Sept. 12.
Lazo and the ‘Catz (1-5, 1-2) play at Alisal in league action Sept. 18 at 6:15pm.
