JOLON – A soldier stationed at Fort Hunter Liggett in Jolon was arrested in San Mateo County Tuesday after he took a Humvee mounted with a machine gun during a training exercise, Fort Hunter Liggett spokeswoman Amy Phillips said.

According to Phillips, the unidentified soldier went AWOL at about 10 a.m.

In a broadcast to law enforcement throughout the Bay Area, emergency dispatchers said the soldier was upset over a recent demotion.

“Army leaders are concerned for his welfare and are actively working with local officials to locate the soldier,” Phillips said.

He was apprehended this evening by law enforcement in San Mateo. He will be returned to the custody of military authorities while they complete an investigation on the incident. There is no further info at this time.

The soldier was arrested in a high-risk stop by the Redwood City branch of the California Highway Patrol, with the assistance of San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
