The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of a dead man found in a rural setting along Carlton Road Sunday.

Around 8:30am, deputies responded to a call for a man’s body found near the 100 block of Carlton Road in Watsonville.

Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators were called to the scene to investigate the cause of death. An autopsy was performed and cause and manner of death are still pending a toxicology report.

The decedent has been identified as 39-year-old Daniel Reyes-Mendoza of Watsonville. 

“While there are no signs indicating this is a homicide,” the Sheriff’s Office said, “our detectives will not rule anything out until a determination has been made by our Forensic Pathologist.”

The investigation is ongoing.
