APTOS — A 5-year-old boy was seriously injured Tuesday morning when the vehicle he was in rolled over on Highway 1 near the State Park Drive exit.
California Highway Patrol officer Sam Courtney said the female driver of the pickup, from Watsonville, was traveling south on Highway 1 just after 9 a.m. when she was distracted by her cell phone. At one point her black Toyota pickup rolled over multiple times. The 5-year-old boy was not properly restrained in the vehicle, Courtney said, and was ejected from the truck.
Emergency responders called for a rescue helicopter to land at nearby Seacliff State Park in order to fly the victim to a trauma center.
Traffic on Highway 1 was snarled for about an hour.
The incident is still under investigation.
