West Marine hires Seipel as CEO

WATSONVILLE — Boating supply retailer West Marine hired retail executive Ken Seipel as CEO in December.

Seipel was most recently CEO of Gabe’s and prior to that held executive positions with a wide range of retail organizations including Old Navy, Target and JCPenney.

“It is an honor to join the West Marine team,” he said. “For more than 50 years, West Marine has been the best outfitter of boating-related products and gear. I am excited to lead the brand as we strengthen our market position in boating products, improve our customer value proposition, and enhance our core customers’ ability to make the most of their boating experience.”

Seipel has served on a number of community boards and participates as a volunteer for the United Way, Salvation Army and youth athletics.

Big Creek Lumber offers free contractor conference

APTOS — Big Creek Lumber will host its fifth annual free educational seminar, the “Contractor Conference.”

This one-day event is open to the public and provides real-world business advice to small business owners in the building trades, including home builders, commercial developers, landscape contractors and remodelers.

Presentations cover many topics, including “Protect your Business from Cyber Attacks,” by Roy Kozina, IT Systems Administrator at Big Creek Lumber, “Insurance from a Claims Perspective,” by Jeff Anders with BB&T, “Simple Ways to be Successful with Public Relations and Social Media,” by Marci Bracco with Chatterbox PR, “Introducing the New Simpson Strong-Tie Catalog,” by Jeremiah Coil and Darwin Waite with Simpson Strong-Tie and “Peel and Stick Waterproofing” by Pat Tuel with SK Marketing.

The event will be on Jan. 25 from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Seascape Golf Club, 610 Clubhouse Drive in Aptos.
