The Cabrillo College Board Name Exploration Subcommittee is hosting a series of community forums regarding Cabrillo’s upcoming name change.

During each forum, the top five potential finalists for a new name—Aptos College, Cajastaca College, Costa Vista College, Santa Cruz Coast College and Seacliff College—will be discussed and the community will have the opportunity to discuss the finalists and to ask questions about the process.

The upcoming forums are as follows:

• June 28 at the Watsonville Center, Room A-130, at 6pm—318 Union St., Watsonville

• July 12 at the Felton Library, at 6pm—6121 Gushee St., Felton

During the forums, Cabrillo College Board Name Exploration Subcommittee members Christina Cuevas and Adam Spickler along with Cabrillo President and Superintendent Matt Wetstein will review the process utilized to survey the community on potential new names, then with assistance from the Name Exploration Task Force comprised of 23 community members, to narrow the list of approximately 300 suggestions to a list of five potential finalists. Those five potential finalist names will be revealed with a brief background on why and how each was selected, and community members will have the opportunity to discuss the finalist names and to ask questions.

  1. Very disappointed in the names proposed. South County, including Watsonville, is the forlorn stepchild in this scenario. If we are trying to be “all Inclusive”, perhaps a better name would be Central Coast Community College. Or, better yet, let’s keep Cabrillo Community College. Food for thought….

  2. What is the reason behind the name change? I’m a little late to the party here so this is the first I have heard of the renaming of the college.

  3. I attended Cabrillo College in the early 70s and it has always been known as Cabrillo College – why do they want to change the name?

  4. When originally polled, only a tiny percent of our local population responded to the name
change idea and of those responding, only a few wanted the name changed.
The vast majority wanted Cabrollo unchanged.
More wasted time and hundreds of thousands of dollars wasted by Cabrillo leadership….

  5. The poles show a large majority favor the existing name, Cabrillo College. The board doesn’t like that so now the pull a charade and act like they are giving the community input into the name, but only a name the Board wants, not the name the community wants. Save our money and cancel the name change.

  6. Phony finalists! Save money and leave the name unchanged, as most respondents strongly prefer.

  7. The name change is ridiculous!!!! It’s a waste of money and should be spent on more important things in the community/college
