Watsonville freshman Isabella Alvarez had 23 points and seven steals for the girls’ basketball team in its 55-51 loss in overtime to Dublin High in the Pearl Division championship game at the West Coast Jamboree tournament in Dublin on Monday evening.
Teammate junior Leilani Yasin contributed 13 points and nine rebounds, while junior Stephanie Martinez finished with nine points, 13 rebounds and four steals.
Alvarez and senior Hailey Brooks earned all-tournament honors and Martinez received the Sportsmanship Award.
Senior Brianna Leon had 12 points, three steals and three assists for the Wildcatz in their 59-29 win over McDermitt—the defending 1A Nevada State champion in the semifinals on Dec. 28.
Brooks added 11 points and three steals, while junior Itzury Vazquez finished with six points, six rebounds and four steals for Watsonville.
Alvarez had 19 points and Yasin finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. for the ‘Catz in their 45-41 win over Encinal in the tournament-opener Dec. 27.
The ‘Catz (10-2) begin Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division play at home against Hollister on Jan. 6 at 7pm.
At Aptos 43, Summit Shasta 41 (OT): Senior Berkeley Ashby had 19 points and scored all of the Mariners’ six points in overtime to help lift them past the Black Bears in non-league action Monday.
Berkeley also had 13 rebounds for Aptos, which snapped a three game losing streak.
Aptos took a nine-point lead in the first half on strong defensive play and timely shooting. Sophomore Emi Gansaver-Pitcher ran the point and had a season-best six assists to go along with seven points.
Junior forward Abby Sherwood played a strong post game, finishing with eight points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Eliya Chavez contributed nine points and three steals.
Summit Shasta stormed back to tie the game with less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation, sending it into overtime.
Aptos (8-4) hosts Christopher on Friday at 7pm.
Westmont 41, Aptos 27: Junior forward Abby Sherwood scored a team-best 11 points and hauled in five rebounds for the Mariners in their loss to the Warriors in the 11th Annual Aptos/Santa Cruz Warriors NorCal Invitational on Dec. 28.
Senior guard Berkeley Ashby was in foul trouble early and eventually fouled out in the fourth quarter, which limited her to just seven points.
Boys basketball
St. Francis 66, at Harbor 50: Nash Horton records a triple-double with 24 points, 16 rebounds and 10 steals to go along with eight assists to help lift the Sharks past the Pirates in non-league action Saturday.
Fellow teammate Jacob Jimenez had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Robert Gomez contributed 19 points.
St. Francis (8-3) hosts Gilroy in non-league play Friday at 7pm, followed by its PCAL Cypress Division-opener at home against King City on Jan. 6 at 7pm.
Boys soccer
Mora Salesian (Los Angeles) 2, Aptos 0: The Mariners fell to Mora Salesian in the Elite Division third place match at the SoCal Classic tournament in Oceanside on Monday.
Aptos conceded an early goal in the first half, followed by another in the 60th minute. Mariners head coach Roberto Zuñiga said they continued to press breaking lines and changing the points of attack but were unlucky.
Goalkeeper Noah Curran had seven saves for Aptos (5-3-1), which begins Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play at San Lorenzo Valley on Jan. 15 at 4:30pm.
Wilson (Long Beach) 4, Aptos 2: Julian Torres and Damian Garcia each scored one goal for the Mariners in a loss to the Bruins in the Elite Division semifinals of the SoCal Classic Tournament on Saturday morning.
Nicolas Topete was credited with one assist on Torres’ header goal in the 10th minute. Garcia’s goal was assisted from a cross by Nami Banks that closed the gap at 3-2 in the 65th. Goalkeeper Noah Curran had four saves for Aptos.
Aptos head coach Roberto Zuñiga said they pressed hard and Wilson got a breakaway for a shot on goal. It was blocked by Curran but the ball bounced back to the pitch and the Bruins capitalized on the rebound to cap off the scoring.
“Commendable effort for the entire team but it was a good learning experience and growth for the entire team,” Zuñiga said.
Boys wrestling
Aptos shines at Pat Lovell tourney: The Mariners had five wrestlers make their way on the podium at this past weekend’s Pat Lovell Holiday Classic Wrestling Tournament at Aptos High School
Cruz Contreras placed the highest for Aptos after he took second in the 132 pound division, followed by Dominic Cabot (106 pounds) in third. Lucas Zuniga (215) took fourth in his division, while Alfred Cabot (113) and Cole Moules (157) each placed sixth in their respective weight class.
NBA G League
Santa Cruz 106, at Rio Grande Valley 103: Forward Javan Johnson led the way with 27 points and five rebounds to help lift the Warriors past the Vipers to open the regular season with a series sweep at Bert Ogden Arena on Saturday night.
Forward Kevin Knox II followed closely behind with 25 points and seven rebounds, while center Seth Maxwell secured his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Guard Yuri Collins orchestrated the offense to finish with five points and 12 assists for Santa Cruz (2-0), which plays at Sioux Falls Skyforce on Friday at 5pm.
