Watsonville’s boys’ track and field team recorded its third dual meet win of the season following a 78-50 victory against Monterey in Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division action April 24.
Watsonville sophomore Nain Garcia-Ferria (10:10.63), junior Desi Salinas-Holz (10:42.82) and senior Rodrigo Barranco (11:19.91) finished 1-2-3, respectively, in the 3200. Teammate senior Jared Sunga (4:59.06) won the 1600, while Barranco (5:04.34) took second.
Watsonville senior Gerardo Acosta-Perez (17.92) won the 110-meter hurdles, while teammates freshman Noel Navarro (19.37) and Amado Villarruel (20.41) placed second and third, respectively.
Navarro won the 300 hurdles in 46.87, edging Acosta-Perez (47.39) and Amado Villarruel (48.43) in second and third, respectively.
In the discus, Watsonville junior Lisandro Pantoja kept his perfect record in league dual meets intact after winning with a toss of 154 feet, 4 inches. He also took second (40-06) in the shot put.
Acosta-Perez won the pole vault with a leap of 11-6, while senior Nathaniel Aceves-Aguilar (42-6) won the triple jump for Watsonville.
Pajaro Valley senior Izaak Ocampo (11.44) took second in the 100 dash just behind Monterey senior Kavon Collins (11.19).
Watsonville junior Alex Zaragoza (24.90) and freshman Zach Kinsella (25.47) placed second and third, respectively, in the 200 behind Collins (22.76).
Zaragoza (56.02) also placed second in the 400, while teammate sophomore Damien Amado Villarruel (59.41) placed third.
The ‘Catz, who finished with a 3-2 record in league dual meets this season, will compete in the PCAL Mission Division championship at Rancho San Juan High School on May 2 at 4pm.
Aptos’ Brantley victorious at Sac Meet of Champions: Aptos senior Logan Brantley won the shot put event with a toss of 58 feet, 10 inches at the Sacramento Meet of Champions at American River College on April 26. The Mariners’ standout athlete also placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 156-4.
Next up, Brantley will compete at the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Championships at Aptos High starting Thursday.
Girls’ track and field
Monterey 74, Watsonville 58: The Wildcatz finished with a 2-3 record in PCAL Mission Division play following a loss to the Toradores in the teams’ final regular season dual meet of the season April 24.
Watsonville senior Jocelyn Guzman won both the 100-meter hurdles in 18.66 seconds and 300 hurdles in 50.50. Teammate senior Katelynn Ruiz won the 800 meters in 2:31.92, while junior Lizbet Gomez Abrica (2:33.01) took second.
In the discus, senior Nelsy Hernandez won the discus with a throw of 80 feet, 7 inches, while teammate freshman Noemi Torres (75-2) took second. Senior Jayleen Arredondo vaulted her way to victory in the pole vault with a mark of 8-6, and sophomore Brianna Vanegas (30-7) won the triple jump for Watsonville.
High school baseball
At Monte Vista Christian 4, Milpitas 0: Senior pitcher Dante Darnell allowed just two hits while tallying four strikeouts in the Mustangs’ victory over the Trojans in non-league play April 26. Teammates Tyson Shaw, Carter Wright, Brady Cortez and Evan Vessey each had one RBI for MVC (16-4, 6-2), which plays at Rancho San Juan in PCAL Mission Division action on Tuesday at 4pm.
St. Monica 13, at Watsonville 8: Senior Kaden Ortiz had four hits, including one double, two RBIs and scored two runs in the ‘Catz’s non-league loss to the Mariners on April 25. Teammate senior Rudy Valdez had a pair of hits, one RBI and scored one run, while Ben Miller had three RBIs for Watsonville (9-10, 8-0), which will host San Lorenzo Valley on Wednesday at 5pm.
College baseball
Cabrillo earns postseason berth: The Seahawks extended the 2025 season by earning the No. 21 seed in the California Community College Athletic Association Baseball NorCal Regional playoffs.
Cabrillo will play at No. 4 Feather River (31-9)—champion of the Golden Valley Conference—in a three-game series starting with Game 1 on Thursday at 2pm. On Friday, Game 2 is scheduled at 11am, and Game 3, if necessary, is scheduled shortly afterward at 2pm.
The Seahawks placed third in the Coast Conference South Division with an 11-9 record in conference play, and finished with an 18-21 overall record. They capped off the regular season on a five game win streak, including a 5-4 victory against South Division champion West Valley on April 22.
High school softball
Aptos 16, Harbor 2 (4 innings) : Emma Burgueno had three hits, including two doubles, three RBIs and scored a pair of runs in the Mariners’ crushing win over the Pirates in SCCAL play Monday afternoon.
Teammate Bailey Fulton had two hits, including one triple and one RBI, while Kailna Healy had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs for Aptos, which improved to 7-2 in league play this season.
Sophomore pitcher Mya Najera-White tossed two hitless innings while tallying a pair of strikeouts to record the win for the Mariners (10-5, 6-2), who will play at Santa Cruz (6-10, 4-4) on Tuesday at 4:30pm.
Carmel 15, Monte Vista Christian 7: Senior Kayla Fullalove-Silveira had two hits, including one double, two RBIs and scored three runs in the Mustangs’ loss to the Padres in PCAL Mission Division play April 24.
Teammate freshman Addie Boles had one home run and a pair of RBIs, while junior Juliana Lopez had one double and one RBI for MVC (8-11, 2-8), which will host North Monterey County (2-17, 0-10) on Tuesday at 4:30pm.
At Pajaro Valley 19, Santa Catalina 4 (5 innings): Sophomore pitcher Hemeria De La Torre allowed four runs on five hits while tallying seven strikeouts in the Grizzlies’ victor over the Cougars in PCAL Cypress Division play Monday afternoon.
Teammates Elena Barron and Angelique Torres each had two hits and a pair of RBIs, while junior Virginia Escobar had one hit and one RBI for Pajaro Valley (6-8, 5-3), which plays at Greenfield (9-12, 7-0) on Wednesday at 4:30pm.
At Salinas 15, Watsonville 5: Junior Mia Espinoza had one double and one RBI in the ‘Catz’s loss to the Cowboys in PCAL Gablian Division play Monday afternoon. Teammates Jillian Lerma, Taylor Alves, Layla Romero and Bella Ruiz each had one hit for Watsonville (11-9, 1-6), which plays Monterey (14-3, 6-0) at Monterey Peninsula College on Friday at 6:30pm.
Boys’ golf
At Aptos 228, Scotts Valley 244: Ben Nowark, Colby Culbertson and Nick Bjorn each shot 10-over-par 45 on the front nine at Seascape Golf Club in the Mariners’ victory over the Falcons in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play April 24.
Teammate Leland Blankenship shot a 46, while Will Bartch shot a 47 for Aptos, which finished with a 7-3 record in league play this season.
Scotts Valley’s Adrian Creamer earned medalist honors as he shot 7-over-par 42, while teammates Seamus Drees and Zane Siechen each shot a 47. Brogan Beasley shot a 53, while Gavin Doherty shot a 55 for the Falcons.
Next up, both Aptos and Scotts Valley will compete in the SCCAL Championships at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz on Tuesday at 2pm.
Boys’ lacrosse
At Aptos 19, Soquel 13: Sophomore Parker O’Hara had a team-best nine goals in the Mariners’ victory over the Knights in non-league play April 26. Teammate senior Spike Sorensen had four goals and five assists, while sophomore Ryan Murphy contributed four goals and one assist.
Junior Alex Sandoval finished with a pair of goals and three assists for Aptos (10-2, 8-1), which plays at Hollister (1-11, 1-8) in PCAL Mission Division action on Wednesday at 5pm.
Girls’ lacrosse
At Salinas 18, Aptos 9: Junior Aryel Reyes Mager finished with a team-best five goals in the Mariners’ loss to the Cowboys in non-league play April 24. Teammate senior Maya Rosa added a pair of goals, while freshman Lauren Ashton and junior Aiyana Reyes Mager each contributed one goal for Aptos (9-3, 7-0), which will host Santa Cruz in PCAL Mission Division action on Monday at 6pm.
At Scotts Valley 17, Monte Vista Christian 6: Senior Sofia Niklaus had a game-best 10 goals in the Falcons’ win over the Mustangs in PCAL Gabilan Division play April 25. Teammate senior Dillon Fiorita added three goals and one assist, while junior Lola Ritsema contributed a pair of goals and one assist.
Senior Skylar Dufour had one and two assists for Scotts Valley (6-2), which plays at Carmel (4-3) on Tuesday at 3:30pm.
Boys’ volleyball
At Watsonville 3, Pajaro Valley 2: The Wildcatz improved to 12-0 in PCAL Cypress Division play following a win in five sets 25-16, 25-12, 26-28, 22-25, 15-11 over the cross-town rival Grizzlies on April 24. Watsonville (13-8, 12-0) will attempt to keep its perfect league record intact at St. Francis on Tuesday at 5pm.
