PRUNEDALE—A 7-year-old girl was killed April 7 when she was struck by a car on Highway 101 near Prunedale.

California Highway Patrol officer Jessica Madueño said the girl was apparently trying to cross the highway just before 11pm when she stepped into the path of a car in the southbound lanes. She was struck by a Nissan sedan traveling around 65 mph.

By the time emergency officials arrived she had died, Madueño said.

According to a GoFundMe account, relatives are trying to raise funds to help defray funeral and memorial costs for Elina Gonzalez. The account states that she was autistic and that her father, a single parent, had lost his wife about six months ago. The account goes on to explain that autistic children can and do sneak out of their homes and in this case, it was at night onto a highway.
