SANTA CRUZ — On Jan. 10, the Santa Cruz County Friends of the Rail & Trail, the Regional Transportation Commission and the City of Santa Cruz will come together to celebrate the groundbreaking of the first segment of the 32-mile Coastal Rail Trail.

This segment of the trail will construct a 10-foot-wide path for cyclists and pedestrians to cross a section of the San Lorenzo River.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Jan. 10 at the west base of the San Lorenzo River Railroad Trestle Bridge from 12:15-12:45 p.m., with city, county and state officials and community members on hand. A community party is planned to follow from 12:45-2:15 p.m., with speakers, commemorative giveaways and refreshments. Both events are free, with free parking and a bicycle valet.
