Author to host talk at Kelly’s Books
WATSONVILLE — Carol Murphy, author of “Slits,” will host a discussion about abuse on Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at Kelly’s Books, 1838 Main St. in Watsonville.
“Slits” follows a teenage girl, who comes from a difficult family and struggles with self-injury.
“In the craziness of cultural shifts, we are now finally talking more openly about abuse,” Murphy said. “But abuse often starts early and confused cries for help can go unanswered … But there is help.”

Imura Restaurant benefiting sister city program
WATSONVILLE — Imura Japanese Restaurant, 1994 Main St. in Watsonville, will host a fundraising dinner for the Kawakami-Watsonville Sister City Student Exchange Program on April 10 from 4-8:30 p.m.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the program that allows Pajaro Valley Unified School District students to travel to Kawakami in Japan.

Woman’s Club presents mystery dinner
CORRALITOS — Tickets are now on sale for the Corralitos Woman’s Club production of “Murder at the Earl of Grey’s Hound Manor,” a campy whodunit set in modern-day England.
The dog-themed murder mystery dinner will be held at the Corralitos Grange Hall, 165 Little Corral Way, on Saturday, April 28 at 4 p.m.
The event includes a dinner of barbecued pork loin, au gratin potatoes, salad, roll and dessert.
Costumes are encouraged (e.g., English Manor or dog-related). The club is also requesting donations of dog toys for local shelters.
Tickets are $30 and benefit CWC programs.

Freedom Women’s Center hosting banquet
APTOS — Teen Challenge Monterey Bay’s Freedom Women’s Center will be hosting its annual Completion Ceremony Banquet at Twin Lakes Church’s Monschke Hall, 2701 Cabrillo College Drive in Aptos, on April 13 at 6 p.m.
A group of women will be celebrating their completion of the addiction recovery program.
Sara Beadle, coordinator of the event, said funds received during the event will go toward opening a new multi-bed facility.
“The very same meal you will be eating will be what the residents of the new facility will be served,” she said. “No sack lunches. No leftovers. We invite you to come and enjoy an evening of worship, good food and a celebration of new life.”

County animal shelter has new address
SANTA CRUZ — The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter has been given a new address in order to eliminate issues of visitors being directed via GPS to a restricted parking area behind the main building.
The shelter’s official address is now 1001 Rodriguez St., Santa Cruz.
The former address, 2200 Seventh Ave., will become the mailing address for the newly formed Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation. (More about the new foundation will be available soon on scanimalshelter.org.)
The shelter’s volunteer-run Benefit Gift Shop’s address remains the same, at 2260 Seventh Ave.

Follies holding pancake breakfast
SANTA CRUZ — A benefit pancake breakfast will be held from 8:30 a.m.-noon Sunday at 222 Market St. in Santa Cruz.
Cost of the breakfast is $8 for adults, $4 for children under age 10. “Grannie’s Attic” will also feature household items and small gifts.
Proceeds will benefit Santa Cruz Follies, a local performing arts group for “over 50” Santa Cruz County citizens.

Roaring Camp hosts model train exhibit
FELTON — The California Central Coast Model Railroad Club will display its On30 modular railroad at Roaring Camp Railroads on Saturday and Sunday.
The railroad hobbyists will be exhibiting and operating their On30 modular railway in the Bret Harte Hall on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Parking is $10 per vehicle and On30 train rides are free.
According to Roaring Camp, the On30 train will ride through “realistic scenes from central California during the early 1900s.”
Steam trains to Bear Mountain will also take place, departing at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Train fares are $29 for adults and $23 for children (ages 2-12 years). Beach trains will also be departing from Roaring Camp at 10:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., northbound from Santa Cruz at 12:15 p.m. Beach train fares are $31 for adults and $26 for children.
