Workshop helps parents deal with homework time

WATSONVILLE — Triple P – Positive Parenting Program will hold a four-week group training on “Helping with Homework” on Thursdays beginning Sept. 7 from 5-6:30 p.m. at La Manzana Community Resources, 18 West Lake Ave., Suite E, Watsonville.

Attendees will learn why homework time is a struggle in many families, how to help their child develop a good homework routine, and tools to decrease stress for you and your child during homework time.

The group, led by Liliana Zamora, is free and open to the public. Register to reserve a spot and receive free child care. Light snacks will be provided for adults and children.

Event benefits Aztecas Soccer Academy

APTOS — The Aztecas Youth Soccer Academy is inviting the public to enjoy music, local food and beverages to celebrate the program at the third annual Golden Goals Celebration & Auction.

The event will be held Sept. 22 from 4-8 p.m. at Community Foundation Santa Cruz County, 7807 Soquel Drive in Aptos.

Golden Goals proceeds will help support the Aztecas’ mission and operations. Aztecas players, many of whom were involved with gangs and the juvenile justice system, receive high-quality soccer training and compete year-round in local indoor and outdoor leagues. The Aztecas also hold annual soccer camps for local youths.

The Aztecas are a program of the Santa Cruz County Probation Department, and have been featured on ESPN and in other major media outlets.

Tour showcases ‘waterwise and wildlife friendly’ gardens

SANTA CRUZ — The UC Master Gardener tour will be held in Santa Cruz on Sept. 9 and will highlight eight gardens that are “waterwise and wildlife friendly.”

These gardens will demonstrate how any gardener can reduce water use and still create useable spaces for their families. Tour-goers will see Mediterranean and native plants, water-saving gardening techniques, and habitats that provide safe havens for pollinators and small mammals. 

The Garden Tour Headquarters will be at the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, 1305 East Cliff Drive, featuring a plant sale, with more than 500 plants propagated by UC Master Gardeners. In addition, there will be free presentations on gardening “waterwise and wildlife friendly.”

Tickets are $25 in advance ($30, day of the tour) and are available on the UC Master Gardeners website, www.mbmg.ucanr.edu, or at participating nurseries listed on the website.
